How often do you clean inside your car?

I'm just wondering how often you clean your car?

I guess this could be further subdivided..

*clearing out bits left in the car (wrappers /hair brushes/toys..)

** giving it a hoover.

**proper full inside clean wiping down dashboard, nooks and crannies etc.

I'm also interested in the outside (how often do you drive through a carwash/give it a wash) but it's the inside I'm really curious about.

And do you pay for a professional clean (around here looks like £50 plus) and how often?

I think I'm moving from super negligent (young children) into the "clean car club" now they're older and curious what other people do!

Just about to take mine for a clean inside and out. I think it pay about £20 for it.

Since getting our nice new car last year we’ve managed to keep it very clean. My old car was an absolutely pigsty and only bothered to clean inside a few times a year if that.

Xmasbaby11 · 21/04/2024 12:12

2 or 3 times a year? Dc are 10 and 12. I use the car for short journeys (15 mins) about 10 times a week, half with the kids. It doesn’t get that dirty I don’t think.

notacooldad · 21/04/2024 12:14

Not often enough according to Dh.
He says the inside of a car is not supposed to resemble a skip. He may or may not have a point. I can't say for shame!

Why does your husband let it get like that? Surely he's capable of cleaning.

Dollenganger333 · 21/04/2024 12:16

Every 2/3 months. I have one child who rides nearly every day and works at a yard and another who is 4 and needs snacks when I collect her from nursery. Eventually the car ends up in a mess.

MalibuBarbieDreamHouse · 21/04/2024 12:22

This is controversial between my friends and I…but I don’t let my kids eat in the car! I have never felt comfortable giving them a snack and not be able to keep an eye on them, incase god forbid, they were choking. As a result, my car and their car seats are very clean! DD5 is welcome to bring toys in the car, but takes good care of her toys and will bring them out with her too.
DH takes my car every 6 months or so.

@Higglings
His car is immaculate. He cleans it out every week does oil, water and tyre checks.
Me with nlmy car ,not so much!
It's not a male versus female issue.
It's a person who takes pride in his car v one that's not really bothered!!!

Needanewjobsoon · 21/04/2024 12:36

But been if you don't eat in the car the car gets dusty/carpets get dusty from shoes and general build up of bits in the spaces in the car surely?

And do you clean clean the car or just hoover?

Our car when they were small always had bits in it and it was a hit of a mess but I am and wa okay with that as we were often on the bravh/swimming/parks so having busy bags in the car and tissues and pens and spare water bottles etc was all great. And I would think it a sign of a good day out if they were muddy or sandy or whatever.

Now they're teens though I'm kind of liking the respectable car look.

We took it to be properly done (at vast expense) adn the difference is huge. There's some sort of coating on all the insides so it almost glows. And I've never been one to care what the outside looks like but even I have to admit it looks good!

I remember when I was small lots of men (always men) would have a bucket and wash their car every week. I absolutely cannot imagine that now!

I am. Much hotter on bits not being left in the car now though.

Rubbish goes in the garage bin when I get petrol - handful of rubbish is easy.

Coats I might need go in the boot - I brought those fabric draws for random stuff in the adult children’s cars that seem to work well.

I vacuum and wash the car every 3 months or so - just me now so stays relatively ok.

Floralnomad · 21/04/2024 13:06

My husband does ours about 4 times a year however it’s never full of bits / rubbish as I’m a clean freak and always bring any rubbish in .

TheChosenTwo · 21/04/2024 13:07

Me personally, never! Dh usually takes them every couple of weeks to get cleaned inside and out. Take rubbish out every time we get out but we go on a lot of muddy walks etc so it does get grubby and wouldn’t be very nice to get in if it built up.
the dcs cars are bloody disgusting though, they took theirs to get cleaned last year and the guy told them it was going to cost extra because they were so awful!! Pigs the pair of them.
Don’t really eat in the car either (dh and my cars).

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 21/04/2024 13:16

About once a year 😬

I just cba, I take any rubbish out fairly frequently though.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 21/04/2024 13:22

Almost never.

Needanewjobsoon · 21/04/2024 13:26

Ooh so varies from "takes them to get cleaned every couple of weeks (!??)" to almost never. 😁.

Just reread my previous posts. Gosh awful typos apologies!.

I'm thinking maybe taking it to "be done" a few times a year rather than just a quick hoover at home.

I used to take mine to a fantastic local hand car wash for a clean and valet about four times a year - I live alone so only me in the car most journeys. But the building next to the car wash burnt down a couple of years ago and the car wash premises were destroyed.

I’ve struggled to find any where that I like since, some places are OK with washing the car but don’t do a good job inside ie not bothering to remove mats or leaving windows streaky, others use an automatic machine to wash the car ( I feel claustrophobic when inside them) before doing the valet.

So last month I tried a company who come to the house to wash and valet, he brought everything he needed, just needed an outside water tap. He spent about an hour and a half doing the car and it looked amazing, like new! It cost me £45 which was dearer than where I used to go but the finished result was better and I did not have to wait in a grubby office waiting for the work to be finished! I just carried on pottering inside.

The main area of my car that looks grubby, apart from mud outside, is dust on the dash board and in the little storage nooks. I do have mobility problems so physically could not wash my own car so I consider it money well spent and will use the chap again.

WonderingWanda · 21/04/2024 13:26

Before kids every week. Since kids about twice a year...well probably a clean out of rubbish and discsrded possessions more often, once month but proper clean much less frequent. It is constantly full of mud, sand, water bottles, coats, hats jumpers, food wrapper, walking boots etc. It gets uses as the family car because dh has a hatchback. I gave up trying to keep it clean.

Needanewjobsoon · 21/04/2024 13:28

The come to your house valet ones we're quoting around 65 here!

I clear out the rubbish and hoover weekly. Wash down inside and sticky fingers off windows etc every other week. I wash outside weekly too but my car is always filthy and you would think I never clean it. I have 3 small children and a pony so the car is used to carry horse feed etc. we are in the car a lot going to groups/play dates as well so often eat on the hoof which doesn’t help with mess. Professional full valet yearly

SleepySundaySloth · 21/04/2024 13:40

I get rid of any rubbish whenever it needs doing and vacuum it and give it a full clean every couple of months. Car wash every few months, when I’m passing and remember. I’ve never had the inside of a car cleaned professionally.

Needanewjobsoon · 21/04/2024 14:24

I think in an ideal world I'd get it valeted (either at home or at the place) every couple fo months. I can't believe the difference it makes!
