Fish and chips

When you order fish and chips for the family. Obviously everyone gets an individual fish. But with the chips do you order one large portion to share across the family. Or do you order individual portions for each person?

One large between 2 but depends on age/appetite surely?

Bjorkdidit · 21/04/2024 11:28

It depends where you are in the country, in some places even the standard portion is enormous.

DP and I get two fish and one regular portion of chips, which is plenty. The fish is still big enough for me to have half my fish with some chips as one meal, and I save half the fish to have either as a fish butty or with pilau rice and Chinese curry sauce in another meal.

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 21/04/2024 11:28

Everyone gets their own fish supper. Maybe a small one for folks without big appetites or children.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 21/04/2024 11:28

Very rarely do it these days, but in the past we have found that even the so called small portions of chips are enormous, so we would buy one between two or even three people.

Talipesmum · 21/04/2024 11:30

It depends. If it’s a cheeky midweek chips to go on the side of an omelette or something we’d just pick up one large for 4 of us. It’s a decent side portion no leftovers.
For a Friday night “we’re having fish and chips wahoo” we’d get maybe two large chips and medium fish each or large if reeealllly hungry (our local are MASSIVE).

I like having some leftover to heat up and do in chip butties the next day.

LenaLamont · 21/04/2024 11:30

We order the large fish between two. It’s absolutely enormous and is a much thicker fillet than the normal fish, which I prefer. I like less batter and more fish.

Extra large chips between four or regular chips between two. The nearest chippy have very generous portions.

It’s one each at the next chippy along; their portions are much smaller.

You reheat chips? Microwave?

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 21/04/2024 11:33

Our chippy sells massive portions of chips and there's little difference in price between medium and large, so DH and I go for medium but if our adult sons are home we'd go for large.

The cod is also huge and hangs off the dinner plate either side, so 9 times out of 10 we'll share one as neither of use have particularly large appetites.

Our sons do though and would have one each.

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 21/04/2024 11:33

For 3 of us we will normally order a

Standard fish supper (which is 2 large
Haddock and large chips) plus a

smoked sausage supper ( I think in Englandshire you call that saveloy and large chips).

And share.

Air fryer, or in an omelette as a short cut Spanish tortilla.

Polle · 21/04/2024 11:37

Fish supper for each person

Spinet · 21/04/2024 11:39

I really think it depends on the shop and area. At our chippy 1x fish and chips feeds 2 people but I got accused of Mumsnet Chicken Parsimony for saying that on here once. In reality we are very fat and greedy people so it really wasn't MCP!

PotatoPudding · 21/04/2024 11:40

We are two adults and share a regular sized portion of fish and chips. If DH is particularly hungry, he might get a battered sausage as well.

InTheUpsideDownToday · 21/04/2024 12:01

@saveforthat
I reheat in the air fryer 😊

reluctantbrit · 21/04/2024 12:03

Depends on the chippy. The one we go to feeds three on one medium chip portion and 2 medium cods.

When DD and I are on our own we do 1 medium cod and a small chip portion.

Mix of ways depending on how much time I’ve got!

Microwave works ok ish, but they don’t get any crisp on them, so I microwave to warm them through then stick them on a baking tray under the grill for a minute or two.

Or spread on a baking tray in the oven for 5-10 mins.

It’s always fine! They’re fat squashy chippy chips so they don’t dry out.

I’d likely use an air fryer if we had one but we don’t. As long as you keep an eye and make sure they don’t burn I don’t think you can go far wrong.

Thanks. We always have chips left over and don't have an air fryer. I always reheat indian/chinese takeaways but the idea of reheated chips sounded unappealing. Might give it a go next time.

Chickenonthebone · 21/04/2024 12:52

I like reheated chips. Still taste nice.

GnomeDePlume · 22/04/2024 10:20

We always have individual chips so that we can each manage our own chips. We don't normally plate up all chips. We each like to take a few at a time. This way they stay hotter for longer.

EmpressSoleil · 22/04/2024 10:28

As the smallest piece of fish in our local chippy now costs £12!!! we don't get fish and chips any more!

When we did, we used to get 1large and 1small chips, shared between 3 of us.

AuntieMarys · 22/04/2024 10:30

2 fish, 1 chips, 1 mushy peas between us.
£18

RabbitsRock · 22/04/2024 10:31

We don’t get it very often as so expensive. DH has cod & regular chips. I have either cod or battered jumbo sausage with half chips, which still always seems pretty big! DD15 has cheesy chips which are always a huge portion.
