Would any v kind mumsnetters be able to list which of these we should avoid?
I started watching a few years ago and loved them. But a couple were so scary that I stopped! (I know I'm a wimp...).
I stopped after the Devil of Christmas where the ending just gave me nightmares! I also found the Harrowing pretty scary.
We've just started watching (the first 3!) with our older teens, and I'd really like a list of which ones are proper disturbing so we can avoid those, and enjoy all the others.
Which ones did you find disturbing? Or is it just me!

A hopeful bump!

Honestly? If you're easily disturbed then I probably wouldn't bother. Inside No. 9 is one of the best things on TV (IMO) however, if you're easily scared then I would avoid as most of them have some eerie/scary/unexpected twists towards the end.

No, there are some that aren't at all scary, though they might be suspenseful. I can't remember them all but here's some thoughts (all subjective of course, others may disagree).

Such a great show - listing them has made me want to rewatch it all!

Not scary
Sardines
Last Gasp
La Couchette
Trial of Elizabeth Gadge
The Bill
Riddle.of the sphinx
Zanzibar
Bernie Clifton's dressing room
Once removed
And the winner is
Referee's a wanker
Love's great adventure
Misdirection
Thinking out loud
Wuthering heist
Simon says
Lip service
Last night of the proms
Merrily merrily
Bones of st Nicholas
3 by 3

Somewhat scary, definitely unsettling
Tom & Gerri
12 Days of Christine
Cold comfort
Seance time
Devil of Christmas
Diddle diddle dumpling
To have and to hold
Tempting fate
Dead line
The stakeout
Nine lives kat
Wise owl
Love is a stranger

Too scary for me!
The harrowing
Death be not proud

badger2005 · 21/04/2024 11:01

Oh no really? But I loved the first three (esp. Ben and Gerri and A Quiet Night), plus the 12 days of Chrissie.
It would be great to be able to watch lots of the others, but just avoid the most disturbing ones....

Thanks so much zaxxon!
I guess it is quite subjective... I don't find Tom & Gerri or 12 Days of Christine scary really - unsettling yes but I like that a lot!
I found Devil of Christmas very disturbing. Maybe that was just me! It was the ending (obviously) which I found really horrible.
And yes, the Harrowing was scary!

Seance Time I found scary a bit as it's a jump one!

zaxxon · 21/04/2024 12:55

Yes, it's hard to define them like that because everyone has their own reaction. Now I think more, I wish I'd put To Have and to Hold in the "too unsettling" category, because even though it's not that scary, I kinda wish I'd never watched it.

Some episodes are just clever and fun, though - Zanzibar is my favourite one of those.

badger2005 · 21/04/2024 16:38

I've been pondering what I find disturbing, and I think it turns out to be scenes where women are attacked while in a vulnerable position and visibly frightened. I think that's why the Devil of Christmas and The Harrowing were both so disturbing.
Can anyone advise on which other episodes have that feature? Sorry to have such a weird and specific request!

Some have CSA as themes if you want to avoid this :

Sardines
Wise Owl
Mr King

badger2005 · 10/05/2024 10:37

Have watched lots more of them now, and my tolerance to scariness has increased.
I still love the unscary ones though. We watched 'Love's Great Adventure' last night and I can't stop thinking about it.

The Last Weekend was nasty. Also The Riddle if the Sphinx and The Harrowing. Currently rewatching with 16 year old DD.

badger2005 · 10/05/2024 14:35

Thank you - yes I agree. The Riddle of the Sphinx seemed to be based on what could be the most horrible scenario. And the harrowing was proper scary.
I haven't seen the Last Weekend yet.
Lots of them are just brilliant.
