Have I lost my sense of humour?

Low contact with sister through my choosing. In the past she seems to enjoy playing mind games and poking people until they explode, not limited to me but I was on the receiving end till I had enough.

Saw her at a gathering. She walked in, came straight up to me. I smiled at her and said, ‘hey how are you?’

She didn’t answer this and just said loudly, ‘isn’t it a good job I didn’t wear that jacket’ and walked away.

Was it meant as a joke? I just replied, ah right!

I felt a bit disarmed at the time and wish I could be more assertive.

Was she referring to the temperature?

Was she referring to the temperature?

Nope, my outfit, nodded her head at my jacket as she said it

Definitely said in the context of she has the same one, as my cousin standing next to us said to me after she left, “they’re all the rage, I nearly got one in pink the other day’

Why are you asking about your sense of humour? Was she referring to some kind of running joke you have?
Or has she got the same jacket?
Maybe she just didn't have much to say as you're low contact; I guess it's just best to continue that way.

I see I x-posted with you, OP; see reply below:

That'll be why she said it then.
Probably not meant as a joke, just the old trope about it being awkward if two guests at a function wear the same thing.

No she wasn’t. I’m just more wondering if it was a joke or if it was her not being very kind.

It was said in quite a harsh tone. ‘It’s a good job I didn’t wear that jacket!!!!!!’

She just reinforced why you are NC with her! She was being a bitch - be thankful you don’t behave like.

fedupandstuck · 19/04/2024 17:08

Nothing to do with sense of humour, she wasn't being humorous. She was commenting that she was glad she hadn't chosen the same jacket as you. If she has a problem with it, it's her problem. Your non-plussed low key response was fine, she might have been needling for more of a reaction.

LaMarschallin · 19/04/2024 17:11

I agree with TheGirlattheBack; you're low contact for a reason and she's unlikely to suddenly change.
Try not to fret about it.

I suppose I keep thinking she will change each time or prove me wrong for going low contact

That’s true, I guess I still hope.

Thank you. I hope so, I just feel like I don’t stand up for myself sometimes

That is so weird - if I saw my sister had bought the same jacket as me I would be delighted and find it very funny.

the fact she doesn’t is very telling

no response is probably the best one. Haters gotta hate !

You’d think so, wouldn’t you? Or you’d say ‘oh!! I have that same jacket’

not a weird backhanded comment

I don't understand what she's done wrong here... she was remarking that she's glad she didn't wear the jacket and turn up to an event dressed the same as you? That's not a joke, nor is it an unkind remark. Most of us would be a bit embarrassed to arrive somewhere dressed the same as someone else.

Ignoring me greeting her, saying that and walking away. Then avoiding me for the rest of the evening

@Newtothiz it sounds like you don't like her much anyway so I wouldn't give her avoiding you for the rest of the evening a second thought. If you've already chosen to go low contact surely this is what you'd have preferred anyway?

BlastedPimples · 20/04/2024 06:36

The normal interaction would have had her greeting you hello and then saying smthg about the jacket.

Not announcing what she said and then walking off.

She will have looked odd. Not a bitch but odd.

Stay low contact.
