Asked about children in interviews?

I have had 2 interviews today, both have asked I I have children. I didn't think this was allowed.

Am I right that this isn't allowed?

Strictly speaking, what’s not allowed is making hiring decisions based on whether someone has kids.

Interviewers usually avoid asking about kids because then they can’t be accused of basing their hiring decision on this. It’s definitely best practice to avoid such questions but don’t think it is actually not allowed per se.

Happy to be corrected if someone knows more!

Both jobs were trainee dental nurse positions, so not sure if it's something about the dental industry!
