Car engine warning light ... phone AA?

Looking for advice. The car engine warning light came on when driving home from work. The car is now at home, but Google says don't drive it. It is booked in for a service next week at a nearby garage. In the meantime, is it worth phoning the AA to see if there is a simple fix they can do? We have home-start cover.

Alternatively, should we wait and phone the AA next week to take the car to the garage for the service (just 1 mile away), or take the risk of driving it there?

Wwyd?

(In case it's relevant, it's a Ford Fiesta)

Is it the engine management light? Is it orange? If it's orange you'd probs be able to drive it a mile

This happened to me. I took it straight to the garage where I bought it and the mechanic said I had done the right thing.

what's type of warning light?

I’d drive it to the garage - don’t think the AA would do anything for a warning light if the car is still working

Call your garage tomorrow. They will probably tell you don’t drive it anywhere apart from directly to them. Sadly I don’t think the AA will be able to do a ‘quick fix’. In my experience an Engine Warning light normal indicates something significantly wrong/ couple of hundred pound fix

Fast track your garage appointment - also it makes a difference if it's orange or red. Consult your manual if you're unsure.

I wouldn't worry with an amber light (I work for a garage) but best to get it looked at by a garage. Red is pull over and call breakdown
I have people waiting 6-8 weeks with an amber light for us to get them in

Check the oil and the coolant. The coolant is the bottle with the pink or blue fluid in it. There is a minimum level it should be above, if it is low you can top it up with water for a minute. If your light is orange you should be able to drive it to the garage tomorrow. If it is red or says STOP, don’t drive it but contact your garage and see what they recommend.

If it’s orange you can still drive it with the engine management light on, if it’s red or says STOP then don’t drive it.

is it only that light that’s on or is there any other lights on? I’d phone the garage and see if they can fit you in tomorrow or the weekend.

As said it depends on what kind of warning light. What colour is it?

Kinneddar · 18/04/2024 22:32

I dont think the AA would come out. Your car hasn't broken down.

The last time I rang the AA he took it out for a spin to figure out what the problem was. A drivable car. Definitely not broken down in the way you're saying.
