Luxembourg worth a visit for a weekend?

Found cheap flights to Luxembourg for the end of October. Kids aged 9 & 12. Would be a weekend in Luxembourg city. Is it worth it. The flights are far cheaper than any other airport for our dates & we've never been..

The flights are probably cheap because Luxembourg, along with Belgium, are probably near the top of the most boring places to visit! I've been to both. Not much to see that would fill more than one day.

Ah no!! I was looking at images online & it looks so pretty!

I was in Luxembourg roughly the same time last year. Luxembourg City was one of my least favourite places I’ve ever been. Beautiful architecture but felt really unsafe at night, for example rampant drug use around the key areas like stations and a fair few uncomfortable encounters with men.

The surrounding areas were lovely.

I like it. It's really pretty. Could you hire a car there and visit the castles of the Ardennes?

If the pp thinks that Bruges, Ghent and Antwerp are the most boring places in the world then her opinion probably isn't worth listening to (and she's never been to Reading).

@Igotjelly no way. That's a shame. I always thought Luxembourg would be very safe...
@ViscountessMelbourne I adored Bruges too. Lovely walking through pretty towns.

Visited with younger children last summer. It is very pretty and very compact. Public transport is free.

@CCLCECSC thanks so much? Were the restaurants nice? Did you find it expensive?

Nice cathedral but I just stopped en route from the port to Rust (europa parc)

It felt very safe during the day but it's very much a business city that people commute to so after dark they go home to the suburbs and I found it really unpleasant, never been anywhere that felt so different between day and night.

Also eye-wateringly expensive!

Me and DH went in March 2014 and enjoyed it. Went for from Thursday to Tuesday. (6 days/5 nights, though the first day and the last day day were taken up by travel as it was a coach trip... So the Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, were full days there.) Smile We enjoyed it, but as I said, it was a coach trip, and the people running it made sure we went to all the best places, and organised 2 excursions, and our trip was full board.

So we never had to buy anything, only alcoholic drinks. (And DH wasn't drinking then, so he had coke!) I don't remember it being particularly expensive, but that was 10 years ago, and we didn't buy much. (Just a few souvenirs.) I did give a waitress in a cafe a 7 euro tip (our bill was 23 euros, and I gave her 30 and told her to keep the change.) You'd think I'd have given her a kidney. She was elated. I think they have quite high taxes, and I assumed waitresses were not paid well. I never found out.

Hope you have a nice time @Bridgetjoneski . We stayed in Vianden in Luxembourg, and had a day trip to Bitburg, in Germany. (As you probably know, Luxembourg borders Germany.) And a day trip to Luxembourg City. It was a chilled holiday, and was really nice. And we drove through miles and miles of German valleys and forests on the way back on the last day, and 6" of snow had fallen overnight. It was like a fairytale ... Beautiful! 😄

I was in Luxembourg City for work for 3 weeks a few years ago. Agree with previous comments, it's very much a business/EU institution city, very quiet at night. We all commented on how few children we saw out and about during the day (even non-school age). Very expensive, and not all that interesting.
