Ebay purchase, seller asking for delivery fee to be a bank transfer

I'm not familiar with ebay. What would you think of seller wanting the delivery fee for the item to be a bank transfer? I wasn't concerned initially, but when I entered the details on my bank ap, it said that her bank wouldn't let my bank verify the acct details and it could be fraud. What would you think?

No don’t do it

Never pay anything by bank transfer other to some one you know and trust.

LetsGoRoundTheRoundabout · 16/04/2024 19:54

Absolutely not. The whole point of using a service like eBay is that it comes with protections.

Don't do it and there's a reason your bank is warning you !

Princessbananahamock · 16/04/2024 19:56

seems dodgy I would report the listing to EBay.

dudsville · 16/04/2024 19:58

Thank you, i thought so. I did message her earlier to say what the problem was and to ask if she can draw up the delivery fee as something i pay for on ebay, but is that even possible?

The first time i tried and this warning popped up i messaged her to let her know the problem and asked her to check the details she'd given me, which she did, so it isn't that. If this turns out to be fraud i guess I'll be learning how to get ebay to reimburse me for the item, what a pain.

Why wasn't postage included in the listing? It sounds dodgy and I definitely wouldn't pay it.

dudsville · 16/04/2024 20:11

It's furniture. It was listed as collection, and advised that they'd arrange a delivery quote if needed. I contacted them prior to purchasing to ask what that delivery charge would be and it was acceptable to me so I then bought the item. Is there a way to pay this delivery fee now via ebay?

Don't do this. They should have amended the listing. If you've already paid for the item on eBay, I would request a cancellation through eBay. Then ask the seller to relist it including a delivery fee. If you never receive it or have any issues I don't know where you would stand if you had paid the delivery fee separately by bank transfer. In all likelihood it's innocent and I also get annoyed at eBay's fees as they even charge a percentage of the delivery fee, but you just never know. It sounds as if you haven't used eBay much, apologies if I've presumed incorrectly. So I would also suggest making sure you've thoroughly checked over the sellers feedback beforehand too.

dudsville · 16/04/2024 20:31

Thanks@toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 , you're absolutely right i haven't used ebay much, and never for an item that didn't have delivery inc., so I really appreciate your help. I'll suggest this with the seller. I did check her feedback, it's excellent, but I just don't know what can be fabricated these days. Thanks again.

Ebay are now reporting all income to HMRC which can have an impact on tax and benefits. So could be the seller trying to bring this amount down a bit.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 16/04/2024 20:49

The seller would only be worried about eBay giving their details to HMRC if they are actually a business seller masquerading as a private seller. If the sale is a private seller selling on their own used items there is no need for any of this income to be reported. There is a lot of misinformation and sensationalism about this which has been reported recently.

dudsville · 16/04/2024 20:53

It looks like a business on ebay, so she may be trying to reduce the cost to her but she's not portraying herself as a private seller. I've messaged her to ask if we can cancel this order and draw it up as a new one with the fee included. Thanks again everyone.
