Feeling somebody sit down on my bed at night..

It has happened three or four times now over the past couple of months. I'll be laying in bed trying to drift off (which takes a while sometimes, so I'm still awake when it happens) and I can feel, as clear as day, somebody sitting down on the bed either next to me or at the bottom.

Suffice to say it does nothing for helping me drift off! Obviously when I look, there's nobody there.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is it some sort of sleep paralysis? I'm generally not a believer of anything 'woo' but I'd be lying if i said it hadn't crossed my mind.

NC incase I sound like a nutcase 🙃

Sounds like a mild type of night hag.

Sounds like a mild type of night hag.

Do you know what causes it? I do have bouts of insomnia sometimes and I'm prone to nightmares, I wonder if it's symptomatic of some underlying anxiety.

Sounds 😱 But probably to do with your in-between sleep and awake state. I get something similar sometimes when I’m not quite asleep yet…hearing someone talking next to me, hearing/feeling steps next to my bed, and as soon as I open my eyes, it all stops.

Your half asleep and feeling yourself sink into the matress.

Spoonthief · 16/04/2024 07:14

I’ve experienced similar but when I’m just relaxing in bed. It happened yesterday while I was reading my book.
A slight pressure and a rustle of my duvet. It’s happened before a few times so don’t even think it’s weird anymore !

I know that's the logical explanation but it doesn't feel like it's my body. It's so strange.

For example, I'm in a double bed by myself and I sleep on the right hand side facing the wall. It happens behind me, on the left hand side toward the edge and at the bottom of the bed where I'm definitely not weighing it down as I'm short and lay in a fetal position 😂

Sounds like sleep paralysis I get it often always have done

TreesWelliesKnees · 16/04/2024 07:32

I often hear a sentence spoken when I'm in between sleep and being awake. It is 'heard' rather than thought or dreamt. The last one was 'don't let her eat more chocolate biscuits'. Sometimes it's a baby crying. I think the brain does strange things when you're in that in between state.

Does anything help? I've heard all about the hag type of sleep paralysis so I'm hoping it doesn't progress to that. I don't think I'd sleep again 😐 do you ever get that sort?

Don't let her eat more chocolate biscuits 😁 that did make me chuckle. Indeed the brain is a weird and wonderful thing except when giving you the creeps at night

I’ve had this happen lots! Just assumed it was a weird sleepy brain glitch.
Even though I know it’s nothing it’s still a bit freaky every time! I know it’s not a ghost (don’t believe) so am more worried it’s an intruder! Though why he’d sit on the end of my bed I do not know. 😂

Fannyfiggs · 16/04/2024 07:39

I get this a lot too. It's like the cat jumping up on the bed and walking over the quilt but there's noone there.

@TreesWelliesKnees I also get the voices with snippets of conversation. Sometimes it's so loud I jump out of my skin 😂

I haf this after DF died when I was a teenager. It was strangely comforting - when I told DM she said that he was still looking after me. She said she felt it as well, so I assume it was a reaction to grief and stress.

That's such a lovely way of framing it and I can see why that would be comforting 🙂

I used to get this a lot when I was in my late teens. Maybe once or twice since. Never found it particularly scarey though. Sometimes used to feel a presence walking towards the bed before sitting down!

LakeTiticaca · 16/04/2024 09:26

I've heard our doorbell ring, loud and clear, just one ring. In the middle of the night. Lay there with heart hammering waiting for it to ring again, and it never does.
Once years ago I was drifting to sleep and I felt the bottom.of the bed moving rapidly from side to side, I could actually see it moving. It was terrifying. It's never happened again thankfully. It was terrifying

PollySolo · 16/04/2024 09:28

Just sleep paralysis, OP. It’s pretty common. No, I don’t think it ‘progresses’ necessarily, it’s just an ordinary glitch in the body moving into sleep mode.

Lillers · 16/04/2024 09:30

It’s probably sleep paralysis, but if it is a ghost, just imagine it’s the ghost of a little cat getting comfy for the night. Nothing to be scared of there.

spottyhotdog · 16/04/2024 09:40

I get this often along with my bed gently vibrating. Personally I believe it's my guardian angel, and I love knowing he's there. But everyone believes in different things.

Wishimaywishimight · 16/04/2024 09:52

OP, I get this from time to time too. If DH is out late and knows I have gone to bed he will sleep in the spare room however, a few times, I have felt the sensation of him getting into bed beside me only to turn over and find no-one there. It doesn't freak me out. It reminds me of many many years ago when I lived at home, if I was still in bed when my mother was going to work she would send the dog up to wake me - he would jump on the bed and curl up at my back and we would both go back to sleep!

I do believe in guardian angels and love this theory, definitely going to think this next time it happens 🙂

It's worth having a listen to a Jeremy Vine program from a couple of weeks ago. They were talking about a type of sleep paralysis as a medical condition. Suffers were describing symptoms such as feeling pinned down and seeing shadows and flashing lights. Some found it quite distressing. Apparently they used to accuse suffers of witchcraft back in times of old - useless bit of information there! Have a listen though and talk to your doctor.

Bobbotgegrinch · 16/04/2024 09:58

I get the hag every couple of months (although mine is a bloke in a suit) and I tend to get the "someone sitting on my bed" a few days leading up to the hag.

It's generally a sign I'm stressed or not getting enough sleep. It means that if I can sort those triggers quick enough, the hag doesn't show up.

So I see the presence on the bed as reassuring, it's turning up to give me a warning that the hag is on his way.

(I've said this like I think these things are real. I don't, I know it's all brain weirdness really)

cinnamonbiscuit · 16/04/2024 10:19

I get this sometimes and it's usually when I'm going through something stressful or if I'm too hot in bed. When we had that 40 degree heatwave a couple of years ago I kept waking up hearing odd noises, it was horrible!
