Feeling somebody sit down on my bed at night..

Tigress941 · 16/04/2024 07:06

It has happened three or four times now over the past couple of months. I'll be laying in bed trying to drift off (which takes a while sometimes, so I'm still awake when it happens) and I can feel, as clear as day, somebody sitting down on the bed either next to me or at the bottom.

Suffice to say it does nothing for helping me drift off! Obviously when I look, there's nobody there.

Has anybody else experienced this? Is it some sort of sleep paralysis? I'm generally not a believer of anything 'woo' but I'd be lying if i said it hadn't crossed my mind.

NC incase I sound like a nutcase 🙃

I get this sometimes. The first time it happened I was utterly convinced that my then next door neighbour (perfectly nice bloke) had got into my house through the loft and was lay on top of me. Of course when I woke up there was no-one there. I think all it was was that I could feel the weight of the duvet. Back then I had never heard of sleep paralysis and I spent years wondering if it was actually the neighbour. Another weird thing is that sometimes, either as I'm falling asleep or just waking up, I heard a loud knocking sound and it's very real.

Do you know what causes it? I do have bouts of insomnia sometimes and I'm prone to nightmares, I wonder if it's symptomatic of some underlying anxiety.

Not sure what causes it but late nights, sleeping on your back, being in strange places and alcohol can all make it worse.

GR8GAL · 16/04/2024 14:29

That moment between being awake and asleep is usually when sleep paralysis kicks in.

There's a hormone in our brains that stops us from acting out our dreams when we're asleep, hence the paralysis, but some people wake up during this time and see, hear or even feel all sorts of things, just like a dream, or it might kick in before we've completely nodded off.

Nothing to be alarmed about although it can seem terrifying at the time. There's a logical explanation at the end of the day if that brings you any comfort.

I get this a lot too. It's like the cat jumping up on the bed and walking over the quilt but there's noone there.

@TreesWelliesKnees I also get the voices with snippets of conversation. Sometimes it's so loud I jump out of my skin 😂

I have the cat thing too sometimes

I've heard our doorbell ring, loud and clear, just one ring. In the middle of the night. Lay there with heart hammering waiting for it to ring again, and it never does.
Once years ago I was drifting to sleep and I felt the bottom.of the bed moving rapidly from side to side, I could actually see it moving. It was terrifying. It's never happened again thankfully. It was terrifying

I had this happen. Random doorbell ringing, no kids about. Looked online and apparently the wiring inside can break down over time or even get dirt in it can cause random ringing.

Sleeping on your back forces more activity and blood to go to the area at the back of brain where our fears and anxieties are stored, its the worst position to sleep in if you're prone to nightmares.

TonTonMacoute · 16/04/2024 14:32

I get it too, usually when I'm overtired, also when I oversleep on lazy mornings.

DistinguishedSocialCommentator · 16/04/2024 14:32

I often get it when stressed and or watched scary movie or worried about someone close to me

Some times I feel the bed is going to flip over

GameOfJones · 16/04/2024 14:43

I get auditory hallucinations. So often I'll hear someone shout my name, or I'll hear a voice clear as day but there is nobody there. It isn't frightening, it's just weird but like others have said.... it's just sleep paralysis/my brain doing strange things in the state between being awake and asleep.

As well as being overtired and sleeping on your back, apparently being too hot in bed can also cause hypnogogic/hypnopompic hallucinations. I sleep under a very light quilt and usually with the window open as there's no way I want a hag sitting on my chest 🤣.

Can I ask if you are of an age to be experiencing the start of menopausal symptoms? This was definitely when I started having similar and unnerving experiences - (it mostly stopped once I got over that phase in life).

Goldenphoenix · 16/04/2024 15:09

When I was a teen I had this all the time, it absolutely terrified me and I thought it was a ghost. I also got whispers in my ear sometimes. Now I know it's a form of sleep paralysis but it felt so real.

Now you say this, when I was probably perimenopausal (42/43?) I had two really strange experiences which I'd thought were spooky, and it happened in old places, one was a pub, the other an old building.

I wonder why the perimenopause/menopause thing kicks in with strange thoughts/feelings/sensations?

Sleep paralysis. The brain is a funny thing with sleep. I experience myoclonic/hypnic jerks in my sleep, completely harmless. More infrequent now I’m really the wrong side of middle age, but in my prime they were pretty spectacular. I would definitely shoot straight up over a foot while completely horizontal and the bang back down on the bed would definitely wake a bed partner. One partner was awake reading when it happened, sprang out of the bed and refused to get back in stating it was like something out of The Exorcist🤣. Now I’m not only old but fat also, so I think my body struggles to achieve a few cm’s when it can even be bothered 🤣. The brain is a weird thing and can do and make up all sorts of stuff in various sleep states.

mrswhiplington · 16/04/2024 15:38

I've had sleep paralysis a few times over the years. The first time was terrifying. I lived alone and I 'woke up' with the devil on top of me. I remember trying to scream "help" but no sound came out. All of a sudden I snapped awake. It's happened a few times since but thankfully no more visits from the devil. It does make me wonder about my state of mind though.

TootsyPants · 16/04/2024 15:38

I have felt similar, thinking one of the cats jumped on the bed but when I look there is nothing there. It's odd.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 16/04/2024 15:39

I experienced this as a child. I tend to be very hypnogogic and have had a few sleeep paralysis episodes which tend to occur when I’m stressed. I’m sure it’s part if that between wake and sleep state.

CheapThrillsMeanNothing · 16/04/2024 15:39

I thought this might be a 'woo' thread but sadly not.

I haf this after DF died when I was a teenager. It was strangely comforting - when I told DM she said that he was still looking after me. She said she felt it as well, so I assume it was a reaction to grief and stress.

I always think- imagine if these are actually signs we are supposed to notice and how frustrating it must be to be a spirit constantly doing your best - being excited thinking she’s noticed me! And then hearing all the reasoning and ignoring. It might be the very best a departed person can do. They might have a little energy they can use in some way.
I used to be 100 percent cynical but I’m not now because we know so little about life and death. (Someone will say science knows etc but we don’t do we? It’s arrogant to think we understand much)

PercyPhelps · 16/04/2024 15:54

I get this too, and the ringing thing. I’ve had very frightening ones where I’ve felt pinned down on the bed and been unable to move or scream.

dreadisabaddog · 16/04/2024 16:02

This has happened to me a couple of times. I always think it's my mum sitting down on my bed. No idea why as I haven't lived at home in years. I was a bit freaked out the first time it happened though

fromaytobe · 16/04/2024 16:02

I get it a lot. Mine is the unmistakable sensation of a cat walking backwards and forwards across the end of the bed. We have cats, so the real thing is not unusual, but it happens when I 100% know there is not a cat anywhere in the room.

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 16/04/2024 16:17

I had one the other night where I was convinced that a spider was walking across my face and I actually saw it scuttling across the pillow 😱 before dh told me there was no spider, I was hallucinating.

sleekcat · 16/04/2024 16:25

I have felt what seems like a cat jumping onto the bed and walking across on more than one occasion. It wasn't sleep paralysis. My partner felt the same thing at the same time and neither of us were moving.

ALongHardWinter · 16/04/2024 16:49

I get this occasionally, and I always think that it's my cat jumping up on my bed. But when I look, there's no sign of her! 😯
