Crete in October

Evening wise mumsnetters! Just wondered if anyone has been to Crete in October and found the weather to be reasonable? We are thinking of going with kids towards the end of Oct but am reading so many mixed reports on weather. Don’t need it to be blazing, just pleasant. And if not Crete then anywhere you would recommend in October? Europe or beyond (although we only have a week). Don’t fancy the Canaries. We rarely holiday so want to try and get this right. Budget is not really an issue (well not no issue but we’d like somewhere nice! Thanks very much!!

Hi,

Never been to Crete in October but my Understanding is that it should still be pleasant. But have been to Cyprus then and was still very warm. Just need to remember that it gets dark earlier at that time of the year so the sun starts going down quite early.

I have been in October and although we were only there to the middle of the month the weather was great. A couple of cloudy days, but temperatures still good. A lot of things were tailing off towards the end of the season so something to consider when deciding where to stay.

We’ve been in October half term and it was great. Warm, but not hot.

We were there this October half term. Weather was lovely. Sunny and warm. Great for swimming. Probably mid twenties. There was one day that was colder with a couple of hours of light rain, but most days were sunny and lovely and warm / hot. This was the last week of October. We were in Chania and Loutro.

DuesToTheDirt · 15/04/2024 23:42

We went one year in mid-October. The first couple of days were hot, and then the weather changed. It was still warm, and OK for beaches and most sightseeing, but some activities were out, like the Samaria gorge (risk of rain) and parasailing on the beach (too windy).

I was out there a few years ago in October the Pools are not heated so get a hotel with indoor pool which is hard to find in Crete ,
Also was really bad Rain and Mud slides Oh and hate to say see Rats on the beach in Agios Nickolas Locals call them Squirrels as they come down from the mountain Villas as No Food up there also the Locals Kill all the Wild cats we see some Horror story stuff My 13 yr old daughter said Never come back here Mom ,I would try Canaries instead ,

Been to Malta and Cyprus in October which were both very nice at that time of year.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/04/2024 08:12

We went in October 2019, it was perfect sightseeing weather. No kids and not enough time to swim but people were still in pools and on the beach. This would have been earlier October before any school hols though.

JoJothegerbil · 16/04/2024 08:20

We went in early October a few years ago. The day we arrived there was a torrential rainstorm, but after that it was glorious sunshine and in the late 20s.

ifonly4 · 16/04/2024 08:22

Can't comment on October, but like all areas you get variations. We were due to go to Crete in May 2020 expecting it to be around 17-19c, luckily for us lockdown came and it was cancelled as it was 7-8c in the day and around 1c at night.

bridgeobertroubledwater · 16/04/2024 11:26

My friend went to Crete in October two years ago
It was warmish but rained every day and needed hoodie /jacket for night time as it was chilly

vivainsomnia · 16/04/2024 11:55

Was there last October and it was beautiful. Sea temperature very pleasant too.

BlueChampagne · 16/04/2024 13:09

I've been in November - t-shirt in the day but chilly at night.

Movinghouseatlast · 16/04/2024 13:11

I've been in October a few times and the weather was amazing. Apart from one time when it rained for 5 days solid...

I does rain in Southern Greece at that time of year occasionally so it's just the luck of the drawer!

Wilma55 · 16/04/2024 13:12

Went last year on 5 October, been several other times. Weather was hot but not too hot. We had a villa with an unheated pool - it was freezing! Sea was warm. Some tavernas already closed for the season.

We were near Chania at the same time! It was the last week of the season and the hotel was closing a couple of days after we left. Most of the bars and restaurants in the resort were already closed but Chania was still busy.

The weather was perfect for me. Around 24 degrees every day, a couple of light showers, and we swam in the pool and the sea. They were coldish but acceptable and when the sun was out it was gorgeous.

So glad you asked this OP!
We have been looking at Crete for mid October and have to say that the replies on here are putting us off.
We have been to the Canaries many, many times, but might end up there again I think as we are taking daughters, their partners, and 2 babies, we really want to ‘guarantee’ the weather as best we can. Having said that, we went to the Canaries one January and there was a calima (sand storm) for 5 of our 7 days holiday 😒

Howlongisittomynextholiday · 16/04/2024 13:34

I went on 14 October 2021 to Elounda, arrived to a horrendous storm. It was so bad the rain water was gushing down the streets in rivers. The journey to our hotel was a bit hairy!

The rest of the week was dry with clouds and sunshine. Warm enough during the day for shorts and t-shirts, but not to sunbathe. It was chilly at night and I was glad I'd taken jeans and leather jacket, but I do feel the cold.

I don't think I'd go again at that time of year, but have been to Rhodes at the end of October and had fabulous weather.

AtomicBlondeRose · 16/04/2024 14:55

This is in Chania on 29th October 2023. It was beautiful - very warm but not too hot, wonderfully sunny and still quite busy with tourists.

Thank you all so much for your responses! I am still really torn - such mixed responses 😬 will

We went to Crete (by Agios Nikolas) in October half term a few years ago. We had 5 days of sunshine, very pleasant beach weather (but nobody was swimming in the pool, not warm enough for that!) and 1 day that was totally miserable, overcast and rainy.
