Does anyone else enjoy looking at houses for sale in other countries and also using Google maps to look at random streets throughout the world?

I’m not sure what Detroit is like to live but the houses for sale there seem to be cheap!

I also ended up browsing a housing estate in Finland on Google map street view.

Love seeing different styles of housing.

Omg..are they derelict?!

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/04/2024 21:28

I look on Rightmove Spain to see if somewhere I used to live ever comes up for sale!

From what I've seen of a lot of US houses, they are basically made of wood, sometimes with a stone chimney stack. That Detroit one isn't but then it's cold in MI for a large part of the year.

There's lots of land in the US, some places are sparsely populated and I guess that's why in some places property is cheap by our UK standards.

Yes. Get yourself following some of the French chateau estate agents on Instagram. Some incredible places on there. A snip at 1.2 million! 🤣

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/04/2024 21:32

DP says the whole sub prime mortgage debacle hit Detroit hard and in 2010.you could buy houses for $100 so it could be the market has not recovered.

I love browsing chateaux for sale! I think I am an international curtain twitcher.

They’re relatively cheap for a reason - there are a lot of them, and you need very deep pockets! A relative of dh has one, nothing like as big as some, but even so he told me several years ago that the heating oil alone cost €50,000 a year. God knows what it costs now - and winters can be very cold in that part of France.

I find Alaska and remote parts of the States interesting. I'm also fond of isolated parts of Scottish islands

Detroit is very dangerous with very high unemployment and declining infrastructure. It's not a realistic prospect to live there.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 14/04/2024 21:49

Yeah. DP described it as a shithole.

There are some gorgeous, big places for sale in parts of Scotland for a song relative to the size and grandeur.

Ah that’s a shame. Must be so difficult for home owners there.

The houses I have seen there look lovely.

I’m from the North of Scotland and have family over in the Western Isles. I love the Croft houses over there with red roofs.

I wouldn’t ever be able to afford to move anywhere but I love browsing property and looking at random towns/cities throughout the world.

I must have a look at Alaska too!

This instagram account is quite interesting about someone living on Svalbard.

Omg I would not live in Detroit!! If you are going to look pick somewhere decent to live!
I do, particularly Boston where I grew up and places in New England. Spain too.

CharlotteLightandDark · 14/04/2024 23:04

I follow cheap old houses abroad on Instagram, some proper bargains to be had if you’re not scared of a bit of graft!
