Is first class train worth it?

Going to be travelling Holyhead to London by train soon following a night shift. Was thinking of going first class for the extra room, comfort so that I can sleep for the duration. It's 120ppunds more, is it worth it?

Yes definitely for such a long journey. Except you won't get to enjoy it!

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 14/04/2024 14:37

For that length of journey I would say yes, but see if you can get it cheaper on an offer.

HullaBallu · 14/04/2024 14:39

Try the Seatfrog app - although it's very last minute, it's often a lot cheaper than upgrading on the train.

Zippedydoodahday · 14/04/2024 14:42

Depends on the train company. I think that route is Avanti. In which case I would.

TheShellBeach · 14/04/2024 14:43

It's definitely worth it.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/04/2024 14:44

If they do premium standard on that route you get first class seating but no free drinks or food.
I think that option is much better value for money

VivaVivaa · 14/04/2024 14:44

On that route and post a night shift I definitely would if you can afford the £120 more. Avanti aren’t quite as bad as some rail companies looking at you Cross Country but I still think you’ll appreciate it on the day!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 14/04/2024 14:45

From experience the food on Avanti is absolute shit...

NewName24 · 14/04/2024 14:47

That's going to depend on how much money you have.

Personally, I don't think it is worth spending £120 more to get to the same place at the same time on the same train.

FoodAnxiety · 14/04/2024 14:51

I'd go standard premium instead. It's a first-class carriage but you don't get food and drinks included. It's about £29 to upgrade.

Check what you're entitled to with first class: some companies give you free food and drinks, some don't.

teenboymom · 14/04/2024 15:04

The dates I want aren't actually available yet but if I put in closer dates, doesn't seem to have option of premium, that would have been ideal as I'll probably sleep through the food! I'll defo do it though even just for way over. I will also have 3 hr ferry before that where I will get solid sleep so should be grand

on a long trip, yes.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 14/04/2024 15:06

Do they do upgrade in the day? Some railways used to do this and on one trip (Manchester to London) I had the whole carriage to myself.
