Sinus hell

I’ve had pneumonia, Covid and all the allergies under the sun but sinusitis is next level.

The pain. The gunk. Day 2 of antibiotics and I need them to kick in asap.

I’m on ibruprofen for the pain, steaming with menthol crystals but the green gunk is still coming.

2 weeks of it 😫

Hoping I turn a corner tomorrow!

Saline washes at the same time as everything else. I get sinus problems all the time and this is what helps most. I'd use stem on its own without the menthol as the menthol can irritate the membranes and make it worse. As the antibiotics start working the saline helps wash everything away and break the areas of infection up.

Thank you. It all started 3 weeks ago with this awful virus everyone seems to have. I’m exhausted.

It sounds really miserable and I really hope the antibiotics kick in soon and you start to feel better.

It may be that if you have had covid previously, it's damaged your immune response and you can't fight off subsequent infections as easily.

No advice on this infection but things that can help with preventing symptoms from both allergies and viruses in future are FFP2 masks and HEPA filters (worth getting one for home if you can afford it and maybe a portable one or speak to your employer about getting one for your workplace?).

Also possibly worth using regularly is an anti viral nasal spray such as Boots dual defence which might reduce the risk of picking anything up in future 🤞we use it daily before leaving the house.

Really hope you feel better soon 💐

How COVID-19 alters the immune system

COVID-19 reduces the numbers and functional competence of certain types of immune cells in the blood, say researchers. This could affect responses to secondary infections.

You won’t like the sound of this but it works and tastes nicer than it sounds.
3/4 fill a mug with tomato juice.
Add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice
1 teaspoon of Tabasco sauce
1 clove of garlic, minced or smashed.
Heat, stir well.

Drink 2 mugs of this 2 hours apart. You can also add a piece of grated ginger if you like it even hotter.

AntiHop · 14/04/2024 14:50

Are you taking a daily antihistamine?

newtb · 14/04/2024 15:01

Acetyl cystéine capsules - it's a mucolytic and breaks thé gunge down si it can drain.

MoonlightMemories · 14/04/2024 15:01

I'm just getting over the worst at last of nearly 1.5 weeks of wonderful sinusitis and horrible tonsillitis after getting antibiotics earlier in the week - the former was giving me terrible post-nasal drip, making me have the most horrific coughing fits and making my already very sore throat even more sore. I was honestly on the verge of having some kind of mental break down from the pain.

And the stuff that was coming out of my sniuses....🤢. I haven't slept properly at night for most of that time either. Feel the most human today than I have in what feels like a very long time at last, but still coughing an awful lot of times! I really hope you're feeling better soon!

I get the odd sinus infection and what helps me is massaging the skin under my cheek bones , i put a little facial oil on my fingers and firmly rub /push under and around the cheek bone .
Its a bit uncomfortable when you have an infection but it helps shift the blockage a bit quicker.

SeatonCarew · 14/04/2024 15:52

I have horrendous sinus problems and Plantago drops have changed my life.

You can buy the A. Vogel ones on Amazon.

haveanothertea · 14/04/2024 21:43

Poor you MoonlightMemories. I feel your pain and really hope you feel better soon.

One nostril is completely blocked. I've had a microwaved wheat bag strapped to my face for the last few days. Sinus massage helps a little.

I do take a daily antihistimine as I'm on a daily one permanently for dust and pollen allergies. I have been forgetting recently though as I've just started HRT and it's a lot to remember.

Vicks First Defence has seen off a few colds for me recently but I forgot to use it when DS got this lurgy 4 weeks ago.

Are you allowed to use otrivin spray? Will stop blockages almost instantly and let you blow all the crap out. Just don’t get addicted to it.

haveanothertea · 16/04/2024 18:41

I've got a steroid spray, Phenoxymethylpenicillin (antibiotics) and ibruprofen.

I've had pneumonia, flu and Covid before and none of them have lasted as long or gave me as much of a headache and gunk as sinusitis. It's rotten.

This is my third week now and the antibiotics have got rid of my headache and the pressure but there's still green/yellow (TMI) and my nostril is still blocked.

When will it end? 😩

Those are the same antibiotics that they've put me on for my tonsillitis - they've helped a lot with it and the sinus stuff, though I'm not quite fully cleared up from either yet and have developed laryngitis from all the coughing and general inflammation I think.

I hope you manage to avoid that though and start to get well soon. It truly does feel never ending doesn't it!?

haveanothertea · 20/04/2024 19:10

Yes it does. The antibiotics have cleared up the pain, the throbbing headache and the pressure but 4 weeks in I still sound stuffy and I’m blowing out yellow stuff a bit. It’s getting clearer each day though but it really is a slow burner.

I wouldn’t bother with ‘sinus massage’ it won’t work, your sinuses are cavities behind bones. Sterimar salt spay is a god send! I get sinusitis every allergy season and feel your pain!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 21/04/2024 08:31

I think I’ve found my people! I got what I thought was a simple cold last week but the pain in my face and head is another level. I’ve already had 3 days off work as I couldn’t bear the thought of looking at a screen all day. I now have jaw and toothache as well to add insult to injury.

I’m going on holiday next weekend, UK so thankfully no flights, but I don’t think that’s going to be a lot of fun 😢
