Weaning off the dummy

So ds 15months is very very attached to his dummy. We've been trying to reduce the amount of time he has it and pretty much had got him down to just bed/nap time and in the car but after a norovirus/ chickenpox/ back molar two weeks of hell we're back to square one. I'm wondering how others successfully weaned theirs off the dummy and if it affected them going to sleep at night how did you get round that? I'm still breastfeeding but just morning and after ds gets home from nursery and I don't really want to increase that at this stage either as hoping to wean ds off that by 2 years old as well. Just a bit worried that removing the dummy will result in him wanting to feed more.
