We has a flutter on the National yesterday -
£1 each way on the winner at 7/1
£1 each way on the one that came third at 20/1
£2 each way on the 6th horse at 40/1

Can anyone please tell me how much we should get back?

Reason for question is I think we got too much but the guy in the bookies was so rude and patronising. I didn't want to ask him to check!

I'll have a go.

£1 each way actually means you laid out £2, 1 for the win and 1 for the place, right?

So you get £8 (7+1) for each pound you bet on the win = £8
Then for the place you get 8 / 5 = £1.60. Divide by 5 because place bets usually only pay 1/5 of the odds.

For the third placed horse you don't get anything on the win part because it didn't win. For the place you should get 21/5 = £4.20.

For the sixth place that's outside the normal rules for placing so you wouldn't get anything unless the bookie was offering extra places. Perhaps they were paying six places and you didn't know that, which is why you thought you got too much.

That sixth place would net you ((40 + 1) x 2 ) / 5 = £16.40.

Did you receive £13.80 or £30.20 ?

It was actually £35 - I think you're right that I hadn't realised they would pay out on the top 6.

Thank you for your maths help.
