And therefore ensure the genes are passed on?

Other than humans of course.

By those most likely to be able to provide resources for their young, or pass on healthy genes. as are signalled by their looks, calls, etc

'Looks' and likelihood of producing healthy offspring are the same thing.

Ofc! Bird judge health by strong plumage colours for example (hence male birds are nearly always brighter and more colourful. A male who is stronger, a better forager, in top health will have brighter plumage. A peacocks tail doesn’t evolve without a reason, there’s a lot of energy goes into that!

Humans too

Choosing a woman to mate with

Blond hair- ( in a temperate environment) more vit D absorption, healthy bones for baby

  • dark skin in tropical environment - more protection from skin cancer - longer life expectancy
wide hips - more likely to have a successful birth boobs for breast feeding slim waist - not already pregnant with someone elses baby small and dainty - won't need much food higher voice- will be picked up on by infants and noticed more

Choosing a male to mate with
muscles - strength and protection
wide shoulders - strength and protection
good at sport - good at hunting
deep voice - male hormones and fertility
darker hair - protection from skin cancer ( males don't need to be able to make babies with stronger bones, blond hair is desirable only in the female half of a couple in temporate climates

None of these are set in stone for every individuals desires, obviously but these, and many other traits that are population level preferences are routed purely in the statistically improved chances of successful reproduction
