Not a political thread but lots of Middle Eastern airspace is currently closed.

Situation according to official NOTAMs as of 21:35 UTC time.

  • Iran airspace closed to VFR flights only.
  • Jordan airspace closed.
  • Iraq airspace closed.
  • Lebanon airspace closed.
  • Israel airspace closed.

Watching KAC108 London to Kuwait who look to be ignoring this though!

Watching that same flight too, and I see it’s made it safely into Saudi airspace now. Someone will be having a fairly robust debrief, I would have thought.

KenAdams · 13/04/2024 23:33

QTR43C too!

QTR419 to Doha was heading into Jordan from Beirut and suddenly seems to have turned round again at the border

The attack is meant to be over (so has Iran announced) do you think airlines will avoid the area ? Thinking about Jordan which seems to be a popular holiday destination and how this is going to affect them

CatsLikeBoxes · 14/04/2024 00:00

MEA369 seems to have turned away from Beirut for some reason

One of my DC is off to Oz via Dubai in the coming days, hope it will still be plain sailing (flying).

Probably theyll avoid all that area

Tracking this too, lots of flights being diverted. AFR257 Singapore to Paris for example now being diverted to Cairo via Saudi. Does anybody more informed than me know why this would need to be diverted and not just carry on up to Paris?

It doesn’t make much sense. Could it be for something else?

CatsLikeBoxes · 14/04/2024 00:17

The mea flight diverted away from Beirut to land in Cyprus. But then another flight was going to Doha and is turning back to land in Beirut.

This one is still “planning” to go through Jordan ?

Flying DOH LHR in a few hours, would appreciate any more insight into how this might be affected? Nervous at the best of times!

Possibly fuel? Maybe it will use too much for the detour?

BA126 Doha-London is travelling through Saudi airspace so I'd imagine they'd use this route. Don't worry too much, though easier said than done if you're nervous 🙂

Is going south now.

KenAdams · 14/04/2024 00:37

There's GPS jamming going on so sometimes a plane will look like it's in one place then pop up elsewhere.

That’s the one, thank you! Expecting potential delays.

Is the area closed ? Many are still diverting north and south

AgnesNaismith · 14/04/2024 14:11

I would think it sensible to keep the area closed?

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 14/04/2024 14:18

Most airspace where there is conflict will be closed to civilian airlines, airspace over Ukraine and Russia is used by very few airlines mainly Russian/Chinese/Belarusian the rest fly round.

I think Sudan and Yemen are other airspaces which are closed/not used by most airlines.

mauvish · 14/04/2024 14:19

I've just flown into LHR from Kuala Lumpur, arrived this morning.

The flight took nearly 2 hours longer than scheduled and I understand that we were rerouted over Egypt (instead of Iran) but the inflight tracker was still showing the original route.

14 hr 40 mins in the air - and I'd flown into KL from elsewhere so I'd actually been travelling a few hours longer than that - I'm knackered! But not as knackered as the poor sods on the ground in the ME.
