How can I find old photos? Explain this to me like I am 5 years old.

So I have had Iphones on and off for the last 17 years at least. I have taken many photos on my phone, but TBH I am not all that interested in them, other than assuming that they are 'stored' somewhere: I don't post any images to social media, so TBH I haven't paid them a lot of attention.

I kind of assumed that every single photo I took was saved on the Icloud. But when I looked on there just now (on my laptop), my photos only go back to 2017. There is one random photo from 2012 at the start, then jumps to 2017. I've been taking photos on Iphones since at least 2007.

What could have caused all these photos to disappear? DH has been using Iphones as long as I have, and his photos go back much further. Which is bizarre and we don't really use them any differently.

So can someone please explain to me how this works. Am I wrong to assume that every photo I take on my phone is saved in my icloud account - unless I actively delete it? Is there anywhere I can go to find my missing photos?

You have to have set up iCloud and you have to have selected photos in the settings. It sounds like maybe on your earlier phones you hadn’t set this up in settings. I think you may also have to pay a monthly subscription fee for storage.
