Moths and clothes

I might regret this post later (in case it comes back to bite me in the bum), but I'm really curious to know thoughts, as recently in the office my colleagues said they were packing away their winter clothes and recommending cedar balls to pack alongside them to ensure they don't get moths eating away whilst they are in storage. These are wool, silk, and cashmere pieces.

Now, I've got a few wool scarves and a silk pillowcase, but I've never used anything such as cedar balls, cotton bags, etc while they are away in storage and never had any issues with moth in my bedroom either. I do take out my scarves every now and then to refold, so I do check them, but there's never been any issues.

For people who do get moths eating at their clothes, is this because the garments are left out in the open?

Is it an issue in a certain area?

Is it because the pieces are not stored properly?
