What is it with men and dishwashers???

I cannot believe the amount of times I read stories about men losing their shit about how the dishwasher is loaded!!!

Full disclaimer I am a 40 year old man, me and my wife got a free dishwasher from a family member somehow ages ago, but never got it connected up because we just hand wash everything. I really don't get the attraction of them! First you basically have to clean everything anyway, and then you have to have some machine humming for hours in the background using electricity and water (££££!!!) and then everything just has a really gross chemical touch/taste afterwards! What's wrong with a thorough handwash, letting it air dry then packing away few hours later??

So yes i'm ranting about why I hate dishwashers but why is it always men who kick off when its not loaded properly?? I never women comment about how their husband has loaded in wrong?? I honestly don't get why men seem to get so annoyed about it!😅

You don't have to clean everything before. Just scrape any food off into the bin. It saves a lot of time and mess. I wouldn't be without a dishwasher. It smells and tastes no more chemical than washing up liquid.

Bjorkdidit · 12/04/2024 10:23

I'm a woman who thinks my male partner doesn't load the dishwasher properly. I can get loads more in than he does.

Well that's fine if you like/don't mind washing up. Some of us would rather let the dishwasher do most of the work, and to a better standard.

Dishwashers use far less water than doing the same amount by hand. You can do a whole load in about 10 litres of water, which is about half a sink ful.

You might not like dishwashers, and that's fine, but your reasoning on all your other points are way off.

<spoiler> unless you're literally only doing a couple of things, it's cheaper and uses less water to use a dishwasher rather than hand wash.

As above. I love my dishwasher and wouldn’t be without it. I’ve never had any funny tastes from ours either. It also has the added bonus of keeping the kitchen clean and tidy because you just shove stuff in during the day.

I'm also a woman whose husband doesn't load it correctly. Not me being picky, he stacks things so they don't get cleaned properly.
My dishwasher is pretty much silent and you don't have to wash anything beforehand. No chemical taste on things either. Perhaps you should give the dishwasher a try!

Thanks for the replies! Not getting the responses I want though! I want to know what makes men kick off about dishwasher loading!

If that's all you wanted to know why did you rant about the other things?

DramaAlpaca · 12/04/2024 13:58

I'm a woman and I'm the dishwasher obsessive in my house. DH can't load it properly however hard he tries.

Dbank · 12/04/2024 14:01

I have to admit I get a certain pleasure from a perfectly loaded machine, knowing that you're making the most of the cycle. A combination of OCD and frugality.

Although I do occasionally get a bit reckless with the cutlery tray if it's late and want to go to bed!

LamonicBibber1 · 12/04/2024 14:03

Family of five, no exaggeration would die without the dishy 😅
Two seconds here and there for everyone to scrape and then pop their pots in it over the day, then add the pots from dinner, switch it on. No time at all
Cheaper than firing up my oil boiler to heat water daily. I buy bulk tablets from eBay to make it cheaper too. It would take me twenty minutes each day by hand, no. No.

The kids empty it, or approx two to three mins for me to do it. It's my favourite household object.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 12/04/2024 14:03

Dishwashers use less water and energy than washing up by hand.

I run mine overnight.

Justyouwaitandseeagain · 12/04/2024 14:04

Dishwashers save water (and £££) in my experience... and no dishwasher related disputes here. Both me and DH are perfectly competent and in agreement on how to stack efficiently. The kids are a little more maverick but I am willing to take that in exchange for them actually getting involved and doing their bit (when they do!)

I think that's a general personality thing rather than a man/woman thing - a woman I work with will completly empty and re-load the dishwasher if it's not up to her standards, which is most of the time!

I'm not as bad has her but I do like to load them properly - it means you can get as much as possible in there and the thing can do it's job properly

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 12/04/2024 14:06

Bloody love my dishwasher and wouldn't be without one. I do leave stacking it my husband, he has a certain way he likes it done so i leave him to it, one less thing for me to think about 😁

EverybodyKnowsThatYoureInsane · 12/04/2024 14:09

Can't help you, I know my husband doesn't load the dishwasher properly because the plates never make it in there. 😅 And he's rarely emptied it so there is no one to critique my stacking.

I found since discovering the little filter you can pull out and clean you don't have to go mad to fully clean everything beforehand

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2024 14:12

If you have a question about why men do things, why are you asking on a site that is mainly women OP?

MonsteraMama · 12/04/2024 14:13

I don't have to wash everything beforehand, my dishwasher is very quiet, they're actually very economical in terms of water usage compared to hand washing, and nothing smells chemically afterwards. These are age old reasons people give for not having a dishwasher which haven't actually existed with modern dishwashers for a very long time.

Also my husband has never once kicked off about how it's loaded so I can't help you there either. As long as shit's getting washed and we can go cuddle on the sofa with a glass of wine after dinner instead of standing at the sink hand washing everything we're both happy!

Panicmode1 · 12/04/2024 14:13

We are a family of 6 - it is a national emergency when the dishwasher or washing machine are out of action!

I saw a meme the other day which said there are two types of dishwasher loaders - those who throw things in and the swedish architects - which made me laugh a lot because I'm the former, my husband is the latter. I sometimes put something in the 'wrong' place in full view of him, just so I can laugh at his sighs and eye rolls....To be fair, when he stacks it, he can get WAY more stuff into it than I can - which is a boon because I am a very messy cook!

ViveLaOeuf · 12/04/2024 14:15

My DH rants because he says you can fit so much more in if it's loaded properly. I don't know if it's his maleness that makes him do it rather than his personality tbh.

LoobyDop · 12/04/2024 14:15

I suspect- if a man complains about the way his female partner does a domestic chore, she will either bite back or bite her tongue, and the task will get done one way or another.
If a woman complains about the way her male partner does a domestic chore, there’s a reasonable chance he’ll take it as a signal not to bother again, and she’ll be stuck with it. Women are socialised to suck up and compensate for other people’s shortcomings, men aren’t.

MinnieMountain · 12/04/2024 14:12

Is this perhaps the male equivalent of a "pickme"?

"How about men and their dishwashers, eh laydeeeees?"

WearyLady · 12/04/2024 14:23

My DH is a fully paid up member of the dishwasher police. I refuse to engage and just leave the dinner table when the clearing and harumphing begin, returning just in time for the after dinner cuppa.

alliwantforchristmasis50k · 12/04/2024 14:31

Not sure the tone of my question came across but this is a light hearted issue! 😀
We are a married couple with a small baby so we don't have a massive amount of washing up to do every day, plus we don't actually own a lot of stuff so if we don't wash it up straight away we cant use it again!

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy I do actually refuse to believe that a dishwasher buzzing away for hours uses less water and electricity than a straight up wash in the sink a couple of times a day. Can someone post a scientific link this is true??

@MinnieMountain yes I know mumsnet is 90% women but as a man I do find the opinions on a variety of subjects valuable.

OP posts:
FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 12/04/2024 14:45

Look at the good housekeeping articles on dishwashers. Their test kitchens monitored water use at 200lt per day for washing up by hand.

mine tells me how much water and electric it uses after each cycle. It uses 9lt of water and 0.9-1kw of electric.

dementedpixie · 12/04/2024 15:03

It's me that sorts the dishwasher in our house. I'd much rather have a dishwasher than stand washing dishes for hours each day. My dh would never kick off about loading it as he does it badly!

dementedpixie · 12/04/2024 15:05

And you only scrape the plates before loading it, no need to rinse them.
