What is it with men and dishwashers???

alliwantforchristmasis50k · 12/04/2024 10:14

I cannot believe the amount of times I read stories about men losing their shit about how the dishwasher is loaded!!!

Full disclaimer I am a 40 year old man, me and my wife got a free dishwasher from a family member somehow ages ago, but never got it connected up because we just hand wash everything. I really don't get the attraction of them! First you basically have to clean everything anyway, and then you have to have some machine humming for hours in the background using electricity and water (££££!!!) and then everything just has a really gross chemical touch/taste afterwards! What's wrong with a thorough handwash, letting it air dry then packing away few hours later??

So yes i'm ranting about why I hate dishwashers but why is it always men who kick off when its not loaded properly?? I never women comment about how their husband has loaded in wrong?? I honestly don't get why men seem to get so annoyed about it!😅

Yet you’re asking why men do a thing. Women aren’t mind readers.

calligraphee · 12/04/2024 15:15

chemical touch/taste afterwards this is why I don't use one, the feeling of the dishes.

Otherwise I'd be glad of one.

WonderingWanda · 12/04/2024 15:22

My husband cannot load the dishwasher properly to save his life. Half of it comes out still grubby or full of water but it is better than his washing up skills. It's usually me who actually turns it on and I give it a once over to check for wrong way up cups etc. I don't rinse anything before hand and am lucky to live in a soft water area so no rinse aid etc and nothing tastes funny if I just buy the basic tablets.

My dh never kicks off about anything really, he's very easy going.

Just to add my husband is one of those husbands who think only men can load dishwashers. I am like whatever, because that is the only thing you do do in the kitchen 😏. No washing cooking pots that unable to go in the dishwasher or wipe the kitchen worktops. He is the cook in the house, well he does cook better than I do. I just wish they notice after his has frequented the bathroom in the morning, he would kill the clean the toilet afterwards! I have said it doesn't really get me in the mood to give him some loving at nights, but he either says he has cleaned the toilet !

You don't have to clean everything before. Just scrape any food off into the bin. It saves a lot of time and mess. I wouldn't be without a dishwasher. It smells and tastes no more chemical than washing up liquid.

I find it has a chemical taste too, like it hasn't fully rinsed, does it rinse again after adding rinse aid? I don't leave any washing up liquid on dishes.

AlisonDonut · 12/04/2024 15:37

A - I don't think you understand dishwashers
B - my OH used to do all the pot washing and when we got a dishwasher, he took that task on. Loading, getting it on, restocking everything for it and unloading it.

Look at the good housekeeping articles on dishwashers. Their test kitchens monitored water use at 200lt per day for washing up by hand.

mine tells me how much water and electric it uses after each cycle. It uses 9lt of water and 0.9-1kw of electric.

How do people wash up to use 200L? Just a bit of water to soap everything up, plug in, rinse, sink ends up half full.

Nannyfannybanny · 12/04/2024 15:41

Wish I could have afforded one when I had my 4 kids at home and worked full time nights. I cook from scratch, sometimes it's 2 days to fill.. but it's a slimline, very small kitchen. It is a scientific fact that they use less water than washing up by hand
I only ever use the quick cycle 45 minutes. I've got economy 7, and solar panels. It takes 40 minutes, I also put washing up sponges in there. It's me that loads it properly,he just puts stuff inside. I start at the back first off.

Listen to this - it will change your mind. It explains that dishwashers use much less water and around the same amount of power as washing up.

How do people wash up to use 200L? Just a bit of water to soap everything up, plug in, rinse, sink ends up half full.

Because some people wash up under a running tap on full blast and use masses of washing up liquid so then have to rinse again.

We have a dishwasher where I work but we're not allowed to use it because 'it's not worth putting it on' (nonsense, it would be filled at least every other day).

So we have about 20 people washing all their coffee cups and lunch plates etc by hand, mostly under a running tap, which uses far far more water than a dishwasher.

Plus half a sink full of water is about the same as a dishwasher uses to wash up at an entire load, which would be impossible to do by hand in half a sink full of water.

mondaytosunday · 12/04/2024 16:00

I just rinse and put in. My son does seem to actually pre clean the dishes, and says he likes the fact they've then gone through a proper wash. He is also putting it on even if just half full.

NotMeNoNo · 12/04/2024 16:02

It's so bizarre. We don't pre rinse anything for the dishwasher. Obviously just clear plates into the bin but you would do that for handwashing. Who are these people who wash everything twice?

NameChangeAgainAdvicePlease · 12/04/2024 16:07

@alliwantforchristmasis50k my husband hates dishwashers for all the reasons you state, which, as I think has been discussed, are nonsense.

He sometimes does the washing up by hand just to annoy me so I don't have enough stuff to do a cycle.

He never puts anything in it and if he does it's in a stupid way so I have to move it

What this says about men and dishwashers: nothing at all

We couldn't fill a dishwasher as we don't have enough of what we use. If we did have enough it would take a few days, and surely everything would have dried on? Only two of us. I'd use a full sink of water a day but I think there are easier ways of saving the extra water. 200L though? I just can't believe that's normal.

reluctantbrit · 12/04/2024 17:11

DH loads the dishwasher. According to him I am not able to do it properly. I just shrug and let him organise it.

The only time we had a funny smell was from a change in detergent, swapped back and no problem anymore.

We are three, two adults and a teen, we normally fit 1 1/2 days of dishes in it if we are all at home for 3 meals or 2 days during school time.

That's a lot of washing up I don't want to do.

Just scrap food waste of the plates, no need to rinse.

We let it run during the night that it's normally ready when we get up, we have an energy night tariff and the eco program may take longer but it is more efficiant on water and energy.

I'm a woman and I'm the dishwasher obsessive in my house. DH can't load it properly however hard he tries.

Me too. DH loads things in any old way and I can get twice as much in and avoid hand washing

I think it’s one of those great life unsolved mysteries rather like how men alway take over the bbq 😂😂.

that said, my DH has yet to work out how to open the dishwasher, he just puts washing up in the general area 🙄.

as for the smell I would suggest maybe it needs a cleaner running through it

OnHerSolidFoundations · 12/04/2024 17:42

My DH rearranges ours after I load it.
I just let him crack on 🤷‍♀️

On the other hand he's a disaster at overloading the washing machine. Hey ho 🤷‍♀️

Then why would you ask a predominantly female forum?

Try one that mostly men frequent.

dreadisabaddog · 12/04/2024 17:55

I'm a woman who gets the rage that my partner leaves stuff next to/ on top of the dishwasher rather than putting stuff in, then when he eventually gives in to my nagging he does it all wrong anyway 😂 so you're wrong that it's always men who get the rage

alliwantforchristmasis50k · 12/04/2024 14:31

Not sure the tone of my question came across but this is a light hearted issue! 😀
We are a married couple with a small baby so we don't have a massive amount of washing up to do every day, plus we don't actually own a lot of stuff so if we don't wash it up straight away we cant use it again!

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy I do actually refuse to believe that a dishwasher buzzing away for hours uses less water and electricity than a straight up wash in the sink a couple of times a day. Can someone post a scientific link this is true??

@MinnieMountain yes I know mumsnet is 90% women but as a man I do find the opinions on a variety of subjects valuable.

Maybe ponder your tone? You not only ask a question about why men do something when (a) you are a man and (b) you are on a 95% female forum, and women are not mindreaders. Then you then disbelieve a poster who points out that a dishwasher uses less energy than washing up by hand and ask her for 'proof', because the silly little laydeez probably just believe nonsense because of their fluffy girlbrains, and your masculinity means you can't google?
