Where do you buy your every day tops and t-shirts from?

I'm looking for good quality plain or simple patterned non flouncy cotton tops and t-shirts for every day wear that are a normal length. It shouldn't be a big ask but it seems to be asking the impossible at the moment. Either the material is so thin it's almost see through or the length isn't there or it's got frills and sequins on it.

If you've found the holy grail where did you buy them from please?

I buy plain t-shirts from LandsEnd. Not as good as they used to be but still the best for me. I like V necks and they're rather difficult to find elsewhere.

I cannot understand why huge retailers can't make plain cotton T shirts in a complete range of colours, necklines, and sleeve lengths (I'm looking at you M&S, amongst others) but it is apparently far too difficult now. I would in fact be willing to pay more for this - presuming that they'd last two or three years and I'd wear the heck out of them.

I also hate that grown women are supposed to wear cutesy placement prints which I wouldn't even have put on my daughter.

Bah, humbug.

Absolutely. I'm another one who needs V necks & scoop necks & I've recently spent hours trying to find decent ones online. Shops used to do huge colour ranges of them, all cotton - why can't they do that now?

I've turned into Mrs Brady Old Lady from Viz, haven't I? "I want some of those cotton T-shirts with scoop necks that you don't sell any more."😂

I didn't expect to see this thread get so busy! Thank you for the suggestions, it seems there are only a few shops that are reliable for basics, that's a shame. I'm the same as a few of you, searching for the elusive V neck. I wish retailers would get the basics right before worrying about the rest.

sainsburys are pretty good although the sizing can be haphazard, I've got a size 8 one that's bigger than a size 14!

Ha ha. I got a secondhand (new with tag) 'skinny' 14 that's more of a ten. It fits me perfectly but it would be far too tight on a standard 14 - that's probably why it was donated. Tu/Sainsburys are good for basics, other than the size thing, though.

NEXT have some really nice cotton tops, some polyester too but I much prefer cotton. They also have capped T-shirts for about £7 each and they’re smart and wear well.

Wexone · 15/04/2024 09:51

For long sleeve tops to wear under shirts etc. I love intimissimi. they are fine knit tops that keep me warm and not bulky
I have given up on h and m etc for tops they don't wash well and holes appear.
cos is alot more better but still bad ones slip
love Jane lushka and mos mosh for tops for work. Scandinavian brands I find are better

Whatstheword21 · 15/04/2024 10:00

If looking for different lengths (short, tall, etc) next do a great range. I get long and short sleeve t shirts in tall and they’re perfect

Lelu2021 · 15/04/2024 10:12

Uniqlo has the best fast fashion "basics" quality from what I find compared to John Lewis, Sainsbury's etc.

The Uniqlo U line is excellent

ThrillhouseVanHouten · 15/04/2024 12:54

I have Uniqlo t shirts from the mid 00s that are still going strong!

MelodyFinch · 16/04/2024 15:27

Marks and Spencer’s is really exciting this year and so cheap for just what you are looking for. You can trust the sizes and the quality too.

Halfemptyhalfling · 16/04/2024 15:37

Walking shops like mountain warehouse sometimes have nice ones but they are not as cheap as they used to be. I got some £5 t shirts from Sainsbury's last year and they got holes within 6 months

parkrun500club · 16/04/2024 15:44

I live in Breton tops, which I get from Fat Face, Seasalt, Crew and Lazy Jack's.

I often get them on ebay for half the price.

But they are striped and not plain, and they don't have v-necks.

Ambrose Wilson.

I wouldn't have thought to look there but some of their clothes are just what I'm looking for. And they sell everything - I can see I'm going to spend lots of time browsing, thanks Smile

Thank you.
I find I can buy almost all our clothes from there.

They often have very good discounts, too.

Primark for basic short sleeved v-neck t-shirts (they're the perfect length on me) and M&S for their Slash neck, 3/4 sleeve t-shirts.
