Has anyone experienced a tailor who can "expand" a dress?

I'll try and keep this brief!

My cousin is getting married at the end of May and sent us a link to the dresses she wants the bridesmaids to wear (at our expense but that's another thread!). She let us know ages ago and I bought it in a size 14. When I tried it on I realised that I couldn't do the back up. I am very broad backed! However from the front it looks like it fits ok iyswim. So in my wisdom I bought extra material from the same company and reckoned I could get a tailor to sort it for me. I was a bit too confident in this belief and waited until the school holidays to sort it. I went today and she said I should just size up as my bust is too big. I went online to do a try before you buy service (which I should have done in the first place I now realise) only to discover that all sizes apart from 12 are out of stock! So here's my query, should I keep the size 14 and the extra material and go to a bridal tailors and see if they can help? Has anyone been in a similar position and had dresses altered to go bigger? I have signed up to receive updates when the dresses are back in stock but I am still slightly panicking. All advice greatly appreciated 🤞🏿

I had my wedding dress altered this way
I ordered online and took my chest measurement under my bust and it took my ages to work out why it wouldn't zip up!

A wedding seamstress added a panel of fabric at the back and then a lace up back - I didn't love it but I didn't want to wear a different dress
I've taken a photo of the back and because it looks shapeless on the hanger, I've added a photo from the day from the front

I did ask a different alterations shop first and she said she couldn't do it so you might have to ask around- also I can't remember how much it cost

Good luck

*just to clarify I loved the dress and I was happy with the alteration I would have preferred not to have had to have it altered

I used to work in a bridal shop with a full time seamstress. It totally depends on the dress style and material.

If a corset top they can put extra panels in, if it's the right material they can put inverted triangles in either side. However for some styles and materials going up more than a dress size can change the dress so much it spoils it.

Sorry that's not much help.

A good seamstress can usually do this sort of thing.

Thanks everyone for your messages. I'll try a seamstress tomorrow and see what they suggest. In the meantime fingers crossed the dresses become available sooner rather than later x

Depends on the dress style and how much extra material you have!?
