He wasn't totally unknown in the UK?! Plenty of people knew him as a successful sportsman, and then as an actor in Airplane.

Unless you were a fan of American football you would hardly have known who he was, and he was a bit part actor in Airplane.

So, not totally unknown, but barely known and not enough known to justify the airtime.

tobee · 11/04/2024 16:39

But the case and subsequent trial was very important imo.

Well speak for yourself, I knew who he was.

And what money can do in the US and the way it played out culturally and the media. But pretty much overlooking the domestic killing considering it was a trial centring on domestic killing. Not centred on Nicole.

Not forgetting Ron Goldman.

The trial certainly showed the corrupt and incompetent LA police investigation and how totally split down the middle on racial lines the US was at the time.

mynameiscalypso · 11/04/2024 16:43

He wasn't in Airplane was he? That was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. OJ Simpson was in some of the Naked Gun movies.

Marghogeth · 11/04/2024 16:44

They say we should only speak good of the dead. OJ Simpson is dead. Good.

Andthereyougo · 11/04/2024 16:44

@Tyiue Don’t think he’ll rest in peace. I’m a spiritualist and we believe in retribution fo the bad you’ve done in this life.

Westfacing · 11/04/2024 16:45

Whatever he was in he was hardly a household name in the UK at the outset, but the TV coverage was at saturation levels for the entirety!

littleducks · 11/04/2024 16:45

I'm 38 and don't remember anything about trial and didn't know who he was. I had vague understanding of him being linked to double jeopardy as a young adult.

I recently googled the case and found out lots that was interesting about racial elements, DNA evidence being new and not fully trusted/understood by public, the significance of trial being televised etc.

I knew him from Capricorn One.

I’m 49 now and hadn’t heard of him before the trial. He was known but not a household name.
I was late for work because I was hanging on to hear the verdict.

Cathbrownlow · 11/04/2024 16:47

I am late 60s and I remember him and the trial very well. Disgusting apology for a human.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 11/04/2024 16:48

I only know him as a man who got away with murder.

It*was only really able to be like that because of Sky News existence and coverage and the time of day GMT it was happening. Sky News was in its comparative infancy then.

ageingdisgracefully · 11/04/2024 16:52

Early 60s here and remember the trial very well indeed. I happened to be in LA for part of the trial and remember hanging around the court building. I've got a photo of Johhny Cochrane, OJ's defence lawyer, taking a lunch break.

One of OJ's defence team was Robert Kardashian, the Kardashians' father.

underscorer · 11/04/2024 16:53

I hope he was as scared as the people he murdered.

Zuve · 11/04/2024 16:53

Time flies bye.

CaveMum · 11/04/2024 16:55

I highly recommend listening to the Real Crime Profile podcast breakdown of the murders of Nicole Brown and Ron Goldman and the subsequent trial. There are some harrowing details included but having listened to it (the podcast is hosted by ex-Scotland Yard criminal behavioural analyst and domestic abuse campaigner, Laura Richards, and ex-FBI officer, Jim Clemente) I am in no doubt at all that OJ was guilty.

They've also covered various other high profile cases such as the murders of Reeva Steenkamp and Meredith Kercher which are worth listening to.

blacksax · 11/04/2024 16:59

Meanwhile, in other news, the sea has turned pink in Somerset.

Far more newsworthy if you ask me.😂

The documentary OJ Simpson:Made in America is really good on the whole story and the background of race and celebrity as pertained to the case. I watched it in one sitting having been unsure whether to give him any more headspace. But the lead up to and the immediate aftermath of the murders as recorded in this still gives me a visceral reaction now to think of.

RIP to Nicole and Ron.

Im 37 but know who he is because the kardashians talked about him on their show. Shocking that he was so callous about it.

cariadlet · 11/04/2024 17:08

I used to watch the Police Squad tv programme with Leslie Nielson. Thought it was really funny but had no idea who the very tall man was.

I think that was very typical of most Brits of my age. He was a big name in the US but not known by most people in the UK although American Football fans (even more of a minority sport in the UK at the time than it is now) would have known who he was.

The first time I heard his name was when the police chase was shown on British News.

Then, during the trial, I learned a little about what a nasty piece of work he was but didn't get the full picture until much later.
