Agency declaring less wages

My partner works for an agency . We have a universal credit account. Some months we get less , some more , depending on earnings . I work on an ad hoc basis so so months can be higher and some lower . I’m open with UC with everything they know all this .

My husband can earn quite a high amount but gets no sick pay / holiday pay etc . I haven’t been working a lot so the previous months I’ve been grateful for what we got and haven’t really looked into it. This month I didn’t expect any award as I had worked and based on his take home I worked it out that we wouldn’t, but we have been awarded £350 ish . I looked and the take home for him has been reported as about £700 less than what he took home . I looked back and last month was the same . He says this is due to him having expenses that come off it ( for eg he sends in fuel receipts etc he can spend upwards of £100 weekly on petrol - more depending on where he is working as he works all over the country) he gets certain allowances and something about him being down as a lower hourly rate and the rest are expenses or to do with holiday or something ) don’t really understand it all myself . Also he’s not a contracted employee where he works , he’s through the agency.

Now , my work is through an agency too but I’ve never had any discrepancies in pay - I’ve looked back over previous awards and it has been reported correctly . I don’t have any kind of expenses ( I work from home ) .

Does this sound correct ? I will obviously call them but I’m just worried that we will owe money. We have done everything our side and they have all our bank details etc .

Please only comment if you know - not vague comments of what you believe

Just to add the agency is a legitimate, very big agency . I don’t think it’s an umbrella as Im sure i remember he used to work for one as he used to pay their national insurance contributions and it used to be a big chunk off his wages - even though they paid a high hourly rate - and he left them due to this
