Piglet John or any DIY enthusiasts- what do I use to seal emulsion on woodwork?

I’m hopeless at DIY. Spent hours painting really intricate balustrades and handrail down the stairs to be told by DH that I’ve used emulsion and needs to be something more hard wearing. The colour I’m happy with so looking for maybe a kind of clear sealer thing that’s super strong for over painted woodwork to make it not fade or get marked? Any ideas- I’ve looked on B&Q but just not sure what the right thing is and don’t want to waste money!

Clear matt varnish should do the job
