Are there more men than women out there who are cruel? Or is my perception skewed?

Are there more men than women out there who are cruel?

By cruel, I mean someone who is willing to make someone else suffer, for no good reason.

I don't mean for this to be men-bashing. There are of course loads of kind and caring men around, as well as kind and caring women.

But looking at some of the relationship threads on here (where some men are so mean to their partners), and at the news (e.g. stats about women killed each year by their partners) and the history of humankind, if someone is cruel, it seems that they are often male.

Or is my perception skewed? I know that men are less likely to speak out about being abused by a woman. Throughout history, a cruel man is more likely to have power to exercise his cruelty than women, due to the fact that they more often in a position of power. Also, on Mumsnet, a woman who has been cruel to her partner is unlikely to broadcast it on the relationship board.

I think you've answered your own question

Personally, I'd say truely cruel people I've either known or heard of, it's been pretty much an equal spilt of men and women

cruel - IME pretty well equal
violent - majority male
extreme violence to murder - almost exclusively male (barring extreme provocation)

That's interesting @NannyGythaOgg and @Thecastle1 that you've known as many cruel women as men.

I think women can be worse sometimes!

You’re on a site which is mainly used by women. Many of those women are in straight relationships. Many of those women in straight relationships don’t come onto MN to speak about their happy relationship. If you go on to another site like Reddit which is used by many more men, maybe you’d have a different opinion?

I’ve met a lot of cruel men AND women
