Salty taste in mouth, what is it?

I'm not sure if I am getting ill or something, but I've had a horrid salty taste in my mouth all day today. I've started trying to eat it away which only works while I am eating. I googled it and it said I could be dehydrated, but I have drunk a good normal amount and am going to the loo etc.

Anyone had this or know what it can be?

Could you be pregnant?

Maybeicanhelpyou · 10/04/2024 21:41

What is your gum health like? Do they bleed when you brush or floss your teeth?
could be that

Might you have Covid?

Sinus infection?

unlikelychump · 10/04/2024 21:45

Thanks for responses.

No gum issues, bleeding etc.
Could be COVID I guess but I'd be expecting other symptoms, likewise with sinus infection, I guess there would be something else there too.

Strange!

When l had covid first time around before vaccinations.. nearly every piece of fruit l ate tasted like eating pure salt.. especially Melon and pineapple.. then it was apples and pears..
Four years later.. after trying fruit now and again .. l can finally eat it without it tasting of salt.. my neice was the same with other foods.. my teenage Grandson could not eat peanut butter or chocolate because it tasted very salty.

Sorry - I missed the pregnant one. I've had a period since I last had sex, and have a coil, so pretty unlikely.

Any dental issues recently? A tooth that's a been sensitive to hot/cold/sweet?

EveryOtherNameTaken · 10/04/2024 21:53

I used to get this occasionally. Not so much recently. No idea why 🤷🏼‍♀️

Hi there,

I'm going through the exact same thing! On 25 March I went to the dentists for a cleaning and scaling on my lower front incisors. Two days later I woke up with the most horrible salty taste in my mouth. Can't shift it at all and my mouth is super dry when I wake up. Some days are stronger than others and it seems to get worse in the evenings (although it's pretty bad at time of writing!)

My Covid test was negative.
Have been talking to others who say it's burning mouth syndrome, which scares me as I'm only 32!

Please do let me know if you get to the bottom of yours!

are you on a diet or anything? sometimes if I've not eaten for a longer time e.g. when fasting I get this.
