Please can someone explain annual leave over maternity leave?

I don’t understand very well but know you accrue it?

My annual leave year runs April-April so I just have this year’s entitlement through.

I will be going on maternity leave in the autumn.

Does it make sense to use all of this year’s annual leave entitlement before I go off? When I go back, I will be 6 months into 2025-2026 annual leave allowance.

Thank you

I was only allowed to use what I would accrue before maternity leave and used the rest when I got back. Double check your policy as it may be set?

A company has to let you carry your entitlement over with you being on maternity leave IF there's no opportunity to take it prior to mat leave. In this case they could insist you take it all (whether accrued yet or not) before your maternity leave starts. I'd have a look at any maternity policies, or speak to HR.

I run April to April too. I have used half at the end of maternity and kept half to use between September when I return and April.

Definitely check the policies OP.
But personally I wouldn’t force myself to take more annual leave than I wanted to before mat leave.
One thing I had planned to do (though it didn’t work out in practice) was that I decided when I wanted to finish work, then booked the period between then and my due date as annual leave rather than mat leave. I believe that the latest you can start mat leave is your due date. As it happened, DC arrived early so mat leave had to legally start when she was born (actually, maybe it’s the day after), then I just used loads of annual leave at the end of my time off, which was very welcome by then as it meant I started getting paid again sooner!

I saved all of mine to use at the end of mat leave as that way I got paid full pay for the last bit of mat leave which was helpful in terms of paying for nursery etc. I then actually used a little to bridge the gap between the date I said I would go on mat leave, and the actual date I ended up finishing work as I had some issues towards the end of pregnancy. Worked well.
