Mashed potato - basic staple or too much effort?

NoblyBobly · 09/04/2024 14:29

I was at a social event this morning with a mix of age ranges. We were chatting about what everyone was having for their main meal (dinner/lunch/tea/supper). I mentioned we were having a quick meal tonight of sausage and mash along with some mushroom, onion and courgette.
I was really surprised that so many said they love mash but it's too much effort..........
I consider boiling a few spuds as minimal effort and an everyday basic food. am I out of touch?

@DeedlessIndeed @AGodawfulsmallaffair get yourself a Y shaped peeler, I struggled as a lefty until I got one, now it's a doddle. I've got the Oxo Good Grips one, but any one will do.

DeedlessIndeed · 09/04/2024 20:03

@SausageinaBun - how do you microwave your potatoes? Sorry for stupid question I've not used microwave for doing potatoes before.

Crikeyalmighty · 09/04/2024 20:03

I'm going to confess to using 'Idaho' on occasions - packet and very nice - cheaper than using pre-made and less sloppy- a lot of pre-made mash for me isn't stiff enough

I buy ready prepped mash when we have sausage and mash. Thr potato and the carrot and swede for "health". Served with broccoli and bisto it's def a quick midweek meal!

fungipie · 09/04/2024 20:05

A faff- honestly? How hards is it to peel a few spuds, boil them, drain, add a bit of milk and butter, and mash?
A faff- wow!

No wonder so many people are broke and keep complaining about cost of living! And boil in the bag rice, etc? World gone totally bonkers!

Daz57 · 09/04/2024 20:06

So sad that so many people these days find cooking from scratch ‘too much effort’.

This is one reason why we have an obesity crisis in the UK. So well done you!

Our microwave has a potato button, but I think if you don't you just put them in for 5 mins then check them and move them about a bit and keep on microwaving until knife can go in easily.

Or they work long hours or have health conditions

I cook from scratch most of the time, so if I'm making cottage pie I make mash
But there's also frozen mash in the freezer for a quick meal if I want a small portion with something because I live alone and don't usually have potatoes in

I had cereal for tea because anything else was too much effort and I'm exhausted

romany4 · 09/04/2024 20:11

I love mash.
Takes 7 minutes in my ninja foodie

TimeandMotion · 09/04/2024 20:12

NoblyBobly · 09/04/2024 14:57

It's quick to me.
I threw the sausages in the airfryfer then put the water on to boil in the pressure cooker while I peeled and chopped up the spuds
2 mins to chop a courgette, onion and some mushrooms, drizzled with oil and added to the airfyer.
Drained and mashed the spuds by the time the sausages and veg were cooked.

I’m guessing by “put the water on to boil” you don’t actually pressure cook the potatoes, you just used a pressure cooker as it doubles as a large saucepan? (Because you don’t pre-boil the water when you pressure cook things)

Elephantswillnever · 09/04/2024 20:13

I like baked potato mash, just scoop out insides and mash with butter as I’m lazy.

Nevermindtheteacaps · 09/04/2024 20:14

Stop peeling the potatoes cuts out work and leaves the nutritious skins to enjoy!

ABwithAnItch · 09/04/2024 20:17

I personally hate making potatoes of any variety, they take so long to cook and are so bland… I’d rather have almost any other carb.

No, well done YOU for being so superior 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

I work full time, have young kids and try my best to fit in studying, gym and some sort of social life.
Some things are worth making from scratch. Some things aren't.
Sometimes convenience wins. 🤷🏼‍♀️

It's more faff than putting a few pellets in a bowl and sticking them in the microwave 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

I'm a very competent cook & I hate making mash! I think it makes a lot of mess for something I don't like all that much & aldi / m&s do it just as good.

On Sunday evening I made beef bourguignon & mash to go with it.

I peeled the potatoes, chopped them, steamed them. Put them through the potato ricer into a clean pot (needed the streamer for greens while I was making the mash).
Used another small pot to heat milk. That's 3 pots. Added hot milk & butter & salt & pepper & used my masher to mash them. So 3 pots & a steamer & 3 gadgets/ implements (peeler, ricer, masher)
A LOT of faff. And so messy. Bits of potato everywhere from the ricer.

I made double quantity of the beef & we had M&S mash Monday night & no one noticed !!

We don't have a microwave & don't want one

Daz57 · 09/04/2024 20:30

I worked full time with 3 children but managed to cook from scratch as I couldn’t afford not too. I know it’s not always easy and there are lots of demands on our time but it is something I think is important. I’m sorry if I came over as superior. I didn’t mean to.

I cook most things from scratch.
But there are some things where it's cheaper and quicker to go down the convenience route.

Just because someone might use frozen mash doesn't mean they don't care about what they eat.
It's so handy for people like my Nana who lives on her own .

I bought a gizmo called a 'masha' for a whole £50 and have never regretted it. It's basically a stick blender with a specific potato mashing attachment that makes the perfect mashed potatoes every time. I bought it after seeing nigella brandish it on one of her Christmas shows. My DH made fun of me but he agrees that it makes foolproof mash, so is now a convert. No regrets!

Me too. I love mine. Perfect, lump free mash everytime. Coupled with doing the spuds in my instant pot, it's super quick and easy.

Blimey are you French? No need for all that faff- boil potaoes, drain and add milk and a little butter, use potatoe masher not ricer! Bob is- one pot, one masher, job done.

My pressure cooker requires some water. It's an old fashioned stove top one!
I put it on to start heating up as I peel the spuds as it's quicker!

Thank you - I’ve got one for carrots etc but I’m much quicker with a knife!

My life changed the day I discovered frozen mash. Well that’s being a bit dramatic but seriously it’s amazing and if cooked in milk produces the tastiest smoothest mash

Changingplace · 09/04/2024 21:23

I don’t think mash is a faff at all, if you peel the spuds while the oven is heating up and put the sausages in while they boil it takes about the same amount of time to cook, it’s super easy!

I think it’s a bit weird to consider such a simple dinner a faff at all, its just one pan I don’t understand people saying it makes a mess?
