Mashed potato - basic staple or too much effort?

I was at a social event this morning with a mix of age ranges. We were chatting about what everyone was having for their main meal (dinner/lunch/tea/supper). I mentioned we were having a quick meal tonight of sausage and mash along with some mushroom, onion and courgette.
I was really surprised that so many said they love mash but it's too much effort..........
I consider boiling a few spuds as minimal effort and an everyday basic food. am I out of touch?

I don't think it's too much effort but it needs too much butter to be tasty for it to be a staple for me 😭

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 09/04/2024 14:32

If you are out of touch then I am too. Mash is very simple. Certainly not a big effort

Miloandfreddy · 09/04/2024 14:35

Ugh I hate making mash but my family love it so therefore I make it at least 3 times a week. I'd much prefer to boil some pasta/rice or stick some oven chips on. Baby boiled potatoes in the microwave are a good healthy alternative also

I wouldn’t say mashed potato is a lot of work but I wouldn’t call your meal a “quick meal” either. Three types of vegetables (onion, courgette and mushroom) plus a vegetable that needs two processes (boiling the potato and mashing it 😂). I know it’s not complicated but it’s not a quick meal either.

Dotdashdottinghell · 09/04/2024 14:40

I use pre made mash, I really can't taste the difference and I loathe making it myself.

muddlingthrou · 09/04/2024 14:50

I bought a gizmo called a 'masha' for a whole £50 and have never regretted it. It's basically a stick blender with a specific potato mashing attachment that makes the perfect mashed potatoes every time. I bought it after seeing nigella brandish it on one of her Christmas shows. My DH made fun of me but he agrees that it makes foolproof mash, so is now a convert. No regrets!

It's quick to me.
I threw the sausages in the airfryfer then put the water on to boil in the pressure cooker while I peeled and chopped up the spuds
2 mins to chop a courgette, onion and some mushrooms, drizzled with oil and added to the airfyer.
Drained and mashed the spuds by the time the sausages and veg were cooked.

I find it a faff personally but I do make it. I try to make a massive batch when I do and then I often freeze it in muffin tins so I have kids portion sized ones ready to go after quickly defrosting in the microwave

mynameiscalypso · 09/04/2024 14:58

I hate making mash. I've done it twice in my life. Way too much faff for me especially as it's not something I particularly like.

Roystonv · 09/04/2024 15:00

Rarely have mash except when needed for cottage or fish pie and I get dh to do the mashing!

I do this too and always have individual small frozen portions for my little boy - so handy- do it with mashed carrot and swede too 👍

NoblyBobly · 09/04/2024 15:03

I grew up with mum making mash. We used to have root veg mash too and I still make it. Me and my brother used to fight over who was going to do the mashing, the masher I have is the same type we used as kids!

Frozen mash, microwave it and add a shed load of butter. Even quicker and nearly as cheap

Nannyfannybanny · 09/04/2024 15:04

Spuds chopped up small,5 minutes in a microwave, how's that a lot of faff. What do folk consider a quick meal then?

CuttingMeOpenthenHealingMeFine · 09/04/2024 15:05

My favourite food in the whole world and absolutely not too much effort. I love it (and I keep a tub of smash at the back of the cupboard for days when I want it but don’t have time - not the same but does at a push!).

I don't have good potato peeling technique. I blame my left-handedness, but I'm just not very dexterous.

I do skin-on everything for everyday as a result and skin on mash is just a bit grim.

But I do love mashed potatoes and would never buy them ready-made.

If anyone knows of an easy way to peel a potato then I'm all ears!

TheFormidableMrsC · 09/04/2024 15:12

I have never once made a successful mash. It's always a disaster so I buy it I'm afraid. Aldi do it frozen in bags and it's lovely. There's only me and DS so it lasts a while.

ElaineMBenes · 09/04/2024 15:13

I love mash. I only use the frozen stuff though .... it's quick and far less faffy.

OMGitsnotgood · 09/04/2024 15:15

If you have a microwave, bake the potatoes. Once done, half and scoop out the potatoes. Add a little milk/butter/seasoning. Mashes way more quickly and easily than boiled, no peeling or chopping, and tastes better IMO.

SpringOfContentment · 09/04/2024 15:18

Love mash.
Only a faff because most of the house loves it with real butter, so it needs splitting to make a dairy free version.
Sausage, mash and veg isn't what I would call a complicated meal.

Blackcats7 · 09/04/2024 15:18

I buy mine premade. I’m too disabled these days to cook properly but tbh it was too much faff when I was working and busy too so haven’t made it from actual spuds for about 20 years.

WeightoftheWorld · 09/04/2024 15:19

We love mash but rarely make it as it is a faff and takes ages.

I just boil the potatoes with the skin on and use a ricer.

PutOnYourRedShoesAndLetsDance · 09/04/2024 15:20

I wouldn't do it these days..Sainsburys frozen mash is so 😋😋😋.. l do jacket potatoes.. start in microwave and finish to crisp in airfryer
