Question about card refunds

Could a shop refund some money onto a card if they had all the details or do they need the physical card?

I've had a refund to Apple Pay on my phone a few times.

TheTwirlyPoos · 09/04/2024 11:27

Thanks, it wasn't apple pay just a card transaction

Was same card used to purchase it?

The physical card (or phone if apple pay) is needed for a refund. Some shops may give a gift card though.

TheTwirlyPoos · 09/04/2024 11:48

Yeah same card. Came out of my way to return an online purchase and stupidly didn't clock my husband actually paid for it so don't have his card.

They've offered an exchange but not a gift card.

That sounds right then. Worked in retail myself for years. My store would have been exchange only too if the original card wasn't present. If it was your husbands card though he'd need to be present to sign for the refund.

Will depend how their tills or card machines are set up. Most will need the physical card.

fieldsofbutterflies · 09/04/2024 11:59

All the shops I've ever worked in would require the original card to process a refund.

However even if you have the card with you, you're not necessarily entitled to a refund (it depends why you're returning) so an exchange or gift card is common.

TheTwirlyPoos · 09/04/2024 12:11

A gift card would have been fine, an exchange is a pain in the bum

You could return by post presumably?

BusterGonad · 09/04/2024 13:45

Take the card with you next time, I doubt they'll check the name details only the numbers.
