When will the rain stop?

I think we need a new thread everyday on the relentlessness of the rain until we get two dry days, in a row( sorry about the length of the sentence).

@lifeparadox333 It really has been awful for so many families and businesses, and so many are still struggling even months later.

Let's just hope we get some brighter weather soon, it can't possibly rain forever

We thought that back in October, but here we are 6 months later and it's still raining. 😔

BudsBeginingSpringinSight · 10/04/2024 16:26

Rain here. Feel like it's been raining since October.

EddieVeddersfoxymop · 10/04/2024 16:27

Ne scotland here, it's basically rained since July last year. June was gorgeous, and I started painting the miles of garden fence. I never got that job finished, and only managing the odd panel here and there. It's either pouring down, or the wood is saturated from the last downpour. I've been rained off again from another garden job today, and I'll be back to work next week. So sick and tired of the grey dullness 😑

I genuinely can't take it anymore. I'm an immigrant and I live in one of the UK's rainiest city. It's so grey, depressing and cold. If the house felt warmer and drier at least it wouldn't be so bad. My DH is from here and doesn't understand at all. He thinks I'm being dramatic but it genuinely affects you, doesn't it? I'm feeling so hopeless and I often think what if I hadn't married him, had kids etc, then I wouldn't be trapped in this grey, wet pit. I dream of the day the kids are a bit older and I can fly back more often. I don't need heat or even sun. I grew up with much colder winters for example but at least it wasn't so grey and wet. And our house didn't reflect the outside conditions so much, iykwim.

Anyway, does anyone have any tips on how to cope? I've been here for a decade but the last year or two feel genuinely so much darker and wetter that I'm struggling more than ever. SAD lamp does f all. I think I could handle the rain if it was brighter. Or the darkness if it didn't rain all the time. But all together...it's slowly killing me.

fisherking1 · 10/04/2024 18:29

@cathibiscus Sorry no advice. It really is awful. We have had an awful summer and it has pretty much rained since July. As you say, it is the combination of wet and dark skies.

I love the UK but this is testing me to the limit and my normally stoic DH is eyeing up flats in southern Spain.

@BudsBeginingSpringinSight I think it def has been since Oct! 100%!!! 😭

lifeparadox333 · 10/04/2024 18:45

@cathibiscus I'm so sorry! It really can test you to your limits! ESP if you're used to have lived under brighter skies! I agree tho, the rain isn't as bad as the fact there is just not a lot of brighter and clearer skies! It just feels dark and depressing.

I wonder if there are particular parts of the UK that have more sunshine hours than others?? 🤔 I'll have to have a look online see if I can find anything. I have seriously been contemplating a move to Malta, New Zealand and parts of Australia, genuinely I'm fed up of it, I can only imagine how much your quality of life is improved by being under brighter and warmer weather more frequently, being able to go for walks and to the park with your kids more, be outside in the garden more..but yes I have no tips unfortunately, wish I did, I thought about the SAD lamp but that sounds useless if it's doing fall 😭😭😭

Xx

Picked up a random diary, as you do, and in April 2021 I was battling with sleet and various snow days so that’s helped my current despondency. Automatically think April is all blossom and short sleeves but it’s really not. Not these days, anyway.

LlynTegid · 10/04/2024 19:23

If there are any Mancunians on this thread it will never end! Do they ever get two dry days in a row?

AutumnBride · 10/04/2024 19:31

I'm not commenting on the weather forecast for the weekend incase I jinx it.

I'm desperate to get some gardening done.

Littleelffriend · 10/04/2024 19:34

NE Scotland here as well, so fucking sick of it. As others have said, the miracle of a dry day and everywhere is so wet underfoot and it’s freezing.

I've been gardening in the rain today, did about 90 minutes in persistent drizzle just out of desperation. It wasn't completely awful but very very nearly. Surprised how damp & cold my bum got, all that bending over I suppose. Would not recommend.

AutumnBride · 10/04/2024 19:45

@Sameratdifferenthat I did some weeding in between showers on Saturday, the ground is so waterlogged even that was hard going.

It's not particularly cold, so warmer weather plus rain = loads of weeds.

Titsywoo · 10/04/2024 19:54

I'm in the SE and also sick of it. I just feel cold and damp all the time. The Met Office long range forecast for the next month says the weather will become more settled up North and more rain down here for the 2nd half of April 😭

Last summer was pretty crap - it only got warm part way through June then was cooling down from early August. I hoped we would have a decent spring/summer this year instead but it's not looking good! We didn't even have snow to break up the grey and gloom. Plus I'm holidaying in the UK this year so no escape!

IVFlife · 10/04/2024 19:56

It's awful. We moved house in January and can remember 3 dry days we've had. Most days rains at least half the day. Today has been relentless

DobbyTheHouseElk · 10/04/2024 20:02

My sister lives in Australia and it’s rained every day since Feb with her. They had an awful Dec. The main school holidays, storms and rain. They couldn’t go on the beach at all. Too wet and windy.

Sunnnybunny72 · 10/04/2024 20:02

My Facebook history shows four years ago today during lockdown, we were having a barbecue!!

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 10/04/2024 20:14

I just want to mow my lawn! It's either raining, or not raining but too wet to mow, or not raining but we're at work so still can't mow!

I'm milton keynes and it feels like non stop wind and rain lately.

Zimunya · 10/04/2024 20:25

lifeparadox333 · 10/04/2024 13:13

I was seriously contemplating a move to New Zealand or Aus but I'm still trying to work out how their healthcare system works! But yest I read a report in the guardian think it was that they're curbing the immigration as they had a record number of people move their last yr! Not surprising with all the political u rest with the rest of the world and the crap weather!

Not trying to put you off emigrating (there are lots of good reasons to do so IMHO), but don’t go to NZ because you think it rains less than the UK - that’s not necessarily so at all.
NZ rain - “The average rainfall in most urban areas is between 600 and 1,600 mm a year. In the mountain ranges annual rainfall often exceeds 5,000 mm, and in the Southern Alps it can be more than 10,000 mm.”

Mairzydotes · 10/04/2024 20:32

It's rained most days here since July , just before the end of summer term. When there has been dry days , it's rained overnight.

Lifesd · 11/04/2024 12:30

@lifeparadox333 I haven’t messaged yet but I will! In middle or job interviews

stayathomer · 11/04/2024 12:32

In Ireland and we had the most gorgeous Monday and then bam! (bam is the sound of the crazy rain;))

ZipZapZoom · 11/04/2024 14:15

I'm sure this will jinx it but it's 2.15pm and so far today it's not rained at all and there's no clouds in the sky! I think this might be first fully dry day since last year... 😯

fisherking1 · 11/04/2024 14:44

Here too! Sunny and warm from about midday...but will it stay dry tomorrow?

On my walk today it felt odd, my eyes took a while to adjust and I felt like I had been living underground for a year.
