Why am I no longer a hairy beast?

I stopped shaving after major surgery a couple of years ago put me out of action for months but nothing has grown back! I’m definitely not complaining but I am confused. Anyone any ideas what's the cause?

Your body putting in all its effort into repairing after surgery - or menopause?

YoongiMarryMe · 08/04/2024 21:56

I don’t think it’s menopause as I’m frequently checking symptoms lists and don’t have any yet (I’m early 40's) . Maybe the healing thing is it!

I'm very happy to be no longer yeti like anyway! I’ve been shaving my arms since I was 12! Blush

Hopefully it's not this but I think hypothyroidism makes you less hairy?

I’ve just quickly googled and don’t think it’s that, thankfully!

I had a total hysterectomy age 38 ( I'm now 66) my hair on my legs / underarms just vanished and stopped growing.. lucky me... wish my bikini line had.. ( still having to shave that but it's got sparse lol). GP told me it was hormone related.

RosesAndHellebores · 08/04/2024 22:06

My leg and arm hair disappeared when my son was born nearly 30 years ago.

I was taking levothyroxine subsequent to Graves disease and the midwives failed to check the TSH and I tipped into hypo. Was only temporary. No idea what caused it.

@YoongiMarryMe are you still on medication?

Good! Smile

Glad to see I’m not alone in my hairlessness! 😁

Hormones seem to be the answer one way or the other!

@beetr00 I'm on a whole bunch of medication! But I was on all of it long before the surgery. Thank you for the link!

Oh and I did Google this before asking you lovely lot but I was clearly googling the wrong terms! This has been nice and helpful, thanks everyone.

I had a few strange whole body responses after major surgery in my 40s and talking to a friend who experienced similar with different but also major surgery she did too. My hair growth didn't stop entirely (although I was a total Hairy Mary previous) but it got very sparse, also we both had a tonne of very dry skin on our legs, bizarrely. Few other odd bits and bobs that drs dismissed. No idea what was behind it all so sorry can't help in solving the puzzle but just wanted to say you are not alone!

Crapuscular · 08/04/2024 22:35

My leg hairs disappeared after my second child was born around 27 years ago. I've never shaved them since. I'm now 60.

YoongiMarryMe · 08/04/2024 22:54

@HauntedBungalow I had other post surgery weirdness too! Couldn’t handle any spice at all for a year and a half after but before I loved a hot curry! My dad was the same after he had surgery too. So much post surgery weirdness going on with us all that less hairyness is the least of it it seems 😂

The hair on my head has almost all fallen out (and later grown back) several times after illness and/or surgery. Can't remember if body hair went too...

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/04/2024 05:18

Maybe less hair is a peri menopause symptom?? It's not always night sweats and mood swings.

ArcticBells · 09/04/2024 05:43

I'm post menopausal and no longer have much body hair; thankfully I still have a full head of hair!
