Put an item on FB marketplace.
got a reply from a chap wanting it. Said he’d PayPal me which I thought odd as he doesn’t know me from Adam and I might just disappear with his £50. Then he sent a ‘have you received payment’ message.
I checked PayPal and no I haven’t.
then in my email junk box is this (pic).
scam?

PegasusReturns · 08/04/2024 21:40

Obviously that email isn’t from PayPal - check the address.

similarminimer · 08/04/2024 21:40

Dont toych it with a barge pole

Hermittrismegistus · 08/04/2024 21:41

The scam is that you send the extra £100..and have get a penny back.

heartsinvisiblefury · 08/04/2024 21:41

Just reading how badly it is written SCREAMS scam

Anameisaname · 08/04/2024 21:41

Yes it's a scam. Common one

BathroomReDesign · 08/04/2024 21:42

100% a scam that my friend nearly fell for. Word for word the same as you. They have your email address and make it look like PayPal.

Saintmariesleuth · 08/04/2024 21:42

I think the scam is to persuade you to pay for the account upgrade so that you can access the £50 payment

Delete the email

Bluebelldrifts · 08/04/2024 21:42

I had something similar at the weekend - a woman refusing to pay by anything but PayPal, which rang alarm bells. Had a Google - I think the gist of it is that's a scam email, then you get another saying the £150 is credited to your account (also scam email) then buyer asks you to transfer the £100 back.

Or something along those lines.

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 08/04/2024 21:43

Yes it’s clear it’s not from PayPal but it says the sender needs to pay an extra £100 not me. So why would they be telling me? Like an arse backwards scammer scamming themself.
im not paying anyone anything

That's the scam. You believe the fake PayPal email and send the item without checking.

BathroomReDesign · 08/04/2024 21:43

The next step is they tell you that they trust you and that you will send the £100 extra back. There is no money in your PayPal and you’ve just sent a random £100 and that’s it game over.

They'll then contact you and say they had to send you an extra £100 and can you refund them. You will pay them back the £100 and then the transaction will get reversed so you'll lose it all.

BathroomReDesign · 08/04/2024 21:44

You never get the £100, they just send a fake confirmation email again. Or it does show up on your PayPal, they ask you to send it outside of PayPal and then reverse the payment

FiredrakesHaveNoArms · 08/04/2024 21:45

Deleted and blocked thank you for confirming.

On FB, cash in person only. Absolutely no chance anyone who wants to pay the asking via PayPal with zero further questions is genuine. My fave are the overseas ones wanting to buy furniture but are ‘just over on business’ yeah right.
