Just seeing if there's anyone with knowledge on this/where to be looking?

This. It doesn’t really get any cheaper!

Yes - why do you need to elope rather than pop down to the registry office?

Well, some people appear to use ‘elope’ to mean ‘nipping down to the register office’, rather than ‘sneaking off to wed illicitly in the face of familial disapproval’.

We just went down to the register office with two witnesses, wearing clothes we already owned. Our only expense on top of the basic fee was taking them for lunch afterwards.

Genuinely had no idea! - I’ve only ever heard of eloping in relation to the second definition! Otherwise, surely it’s just - getting married?

Well, I agree with you, — to me it’s what dastardly Wickham tries to do with Georgiana D’Arcy and manages with poor stupid Lydia Bennet, but usage on here suggests other people see it as synonymous with ‘having a small wedding’. We definitely didn’t ‘elope’, we just got married with two witnesses!
