A day in Liverpool with kids

We're currently staying in the North West and I'm thinking of taking the DC (8 & 11) into Liverpool on the train. We haven't been for a few years and did the World Museum last time. We enjoyed it and could go again but it would be nice to try somewhere new. Where would people recommend we visit (ideally free or cheap) and have lunch?

The docks is an obvious one as the Tate is free to get in.
Food is in vans around - quite pricey though -there's also a costa at costa prices.
If you decided to use car instead then Crosby beach with the Anthony Gormley statues is ace and there were various pubs around and a decent garden centre iirc.

Isn't the Tate closed at the moment? And the museums had a strike so lots have been closed recently. They are all usually great and free, but it might be worth checking before travel.

I (and DS) live pottering around the docks, the Liverpool Museum. You can go shopping in Liverpool 1 - the Lego shop was always a favourite.
