Does anyone feel really intimidated by sales assistants?

I like to think I'm a nice friendly person
Polite etc
Yesterday I went into river island
Went to the till and two young girls (early 20s ) were behind the till
There wasn't a queue
I walked up and as I got there she looked me up and down ,turned to her colleague and smirked.
I said "thanks can I get a bag please as I put the top on the till "
She turned again and smirked to her colleagues
Didn't tell me how much it was just pointed to card machine.
Then asked "do you want a bag ?"
I said yes and she handed me my bag
No thanks ,no nothing
I felt so intimidated
I thought I must have looked a mess or dressed weird In her opinion
Now I feel really insecure to go back in
Does anyone feel the same in clothes shops?

That was so rude.

Yes I do sometimes. I was in Clarks recently and the 2 young lads working there were doing the same smirking thing with me. It’s horrible.

I work in high schools and get this a lot. Rise above it and see them for what they are, rude. But most of them are very different when they are on their own.

Would honestly love to know what they sniggered at
Then again maybe I wouldn't

Honestly,,OP, they are not just rude, they are pathetically immature. You should just sigh inwardly at their pathetic-ness - and ignore it. Or at least try to act as if you haven’t even noticed - their behaviour is so pitifully pathetic, it’s beneath your notice. Don’t give them the satisfaction of seeing that they’ve made you feel uncomfortable!!

Practice your bitch stare op!

I seem to be a natural and their face soon wobbles with uncertainty

I'd have asked them what was funny. And if they continued to be sneery I'd ask to talk to the manager. Don't let people intimidate you!

A good few years ago this happened to me in an independent shoe shop staffed by a couple of young people. I felt so uncomfortable I left without buying anything. More recently I was in a clothes shop that would appeal to younger people and went to the till to be totally ignored by a girl doing something behind it then got the huff and eye roll when i asked if i could pay. There is quite a lot of no eye contact, pointing and no hello/bye. It does take you back to your school days and the cool/horrible girls!

Well, they wouldn't intimidate me. But if a shop assistant is rude I walk away and buy elsewhere.

They're probably just young and socially inept. At that age where the frontal lobe has yet to fully develop and everything outside of their peer group and IG feed is odd and funny and awkward and everyone above 30 is ancient and having a job and having to serve customers is weird. Just know they still have some growing up to do and perhaps you have some past esteem issues to resolve?

Needmorelego · 08/04/2024 11:27

They were probably only given 10 minutes training and 9 of those would have been how to use the till.
No one bothers to teach customer service anymore because staff turnover in retail is so huge.
