Holiday vs prospect of war

DH and I are lucky enough to have twin girls, they will be 7 in June. They have always been very into Disney, love Frozen and all the princesses.

About 2 years ago DH and I made a decision we'd love to take them to Disneyworld in Orlando - DH also loves Star Wars so seemed like a wonderful trip.

We have literally spent 2 long, hard years saving, going without little luxuries such as takeaways/weekends away so that we have enough money not only to book holiday of a lifetime but have spending money put by too - we didn't want to book the wonderful thing then worry about spending whilst we're there.

Both DH and I are on very average wages, only slightly above minimum and this holiday really means a lot to us, I can't wait for our girls to see everything they love on screen come to life.

Family know we have been saving and we finally have enough so are now ready to book but today DH's mum took me aside and said it would be silly to book now as we're on the verge of a world war and all our precious savings would be wasted.

I confess I don't watch a lot of news, my world is quite small and revolves around my family, my job and our friends - however I am of course aware of the terrible conflict in Ukraine and everything going on in Gaza. I've also heard things on the radio in passing about army chiefs suggesting conscription and moving into a pre war age. But in truth don't understand a lot of it and don't want to terrify myself going into all the reading.

DH's mum is usually very level headed, calm and rational and isn't a conspiracy theorist or anything similar but... is she right? Would we be foolish to book an American holiday right now?

If a war broke out how would something like that even look these days? My only reference is the 1940s when people didn't go on luxury long haul flights as far as I'm aware.

Can anyone who understands advise?

If WW3 breaks out, losing your Disney holiday will be the least of your problems.

Your MIL is Batshit. Book your holiday and have a fabulous time.

100% Agree.

GraceAnatomy · 07/04/2024 23:15

BOOK THE HOLIDAY!

Before you book, remember to do your ESTAs. These are needed to enter USA, valid for 2 years. No ESTA = No entry. I've read quite a few posts on Facebook of travellers not knowing of they're needed. And if for some crazy reason that it's denied, getting a visa from the embassy is a hassle and a lengthy process. And echoing others, travel insurance straight after you book.

It's Orlando Time on facebook is a great group, full of tips and other people's experiences/blogs. Helped me when I booked our 1st trip and had a ton of questions.

Have a fabulous time and make some memories with your family.

And...Bring your mother in law back a nice big disney fridge magnet so she's reminded of what she tried to put you off doing everything she goes to the fridge 😄

Hi

We are in seriously dangerous times#
I was worried sick re Mr Pootins initial rant on the night of the invasions.#I feared a nuke out soon, within 2 weeks

There is not a great danger of war but the way the puppy is barking ie English gov, no wonder Pootin singles us out

What I fear more so is a big misunderstanding EG missile attack mistake for nuke attack and response and Armageddon

I also fear some crazy person to hack nuke systems of Russian or usa/etc and launch a strike

I'd want to survive but as it will be affecting the whole planet, those left behind will suffer a lot more than those taken out in the intial strikes.

TBH, we did touch on/consider a buker build under our garden during the first week or so of Pootins war

Sadly, Pootin is as bad as our lot as a lot of stuff was going on in the Ukraine and the right wing in Russia took action - both sides have lost good, innocent people.

Russian soldeirs on the whole dont have a great choice if they refuse to fight Potis war

Pootin is a coward, shits self from Covid but reads to have kiled hundreds of thousands of people inc children

don't forget to wear your tinfoil hat while sitting in your bunker

@WisterWayne ignore your MIL. if things are going to get worse, even more reason to enjoy hols while you can.

Surely being on the verge of a war should mean you do the trip whilst you still can? A fun last memory before the borders close and they take your fridges to build tanks.

if they take my fridge, where on earth am I meant to store my chicken that will last 5 days? in the icebox?

whynotwhatknot · 07/04/2024 23:22

ive been already to florida and i'll be going again-just get on wit life or whats the point

your dcwill love it

MigGirl · 07/04/2024 23:23

I would book your holiday and go have a lovely time.

I don't however think your MIL is crazy. We live close to a US airforce base (in the UK) just a few years ago they where reducing staffing levels. Now they are massively increasing staff, and adding extra flight squadrons and for the first time in 20 years bringing back nuclear weapons (ones deployed by plain). This is a bit scary and it is all due to Russia, but I'm still hoping nothing comes of it and that they are just posturing.

Ioverslept · 07/04/2024 23:27

I wouldn't worry about her fears but if the world doesn't end in the next couple of years and you are prepared to wait a bit longer they are actually building a new Frozen area in the Paris one!

Risk of war involving the US and us based on anything going on in the world right now is vanishingly small - neither Ukraine or Gaza present a situation (or are likely to) that would involve Florida!!!

If you were thinking of the Lebanon, even Israel maybe I'd give it a miss - but no, she's bonkers, go and enjoy Disney World!!

You can't "hack" nuclear systems to launch a strike. There are too many humans involved in the chain.

Right… 😮😮

Who the fuck is Pootin?
What is a nuke out?
What exactly has this Pootin chap done to show he is singling us out?

Op, go as from what I know, wars, big stuff oten happens out of the blue or stems from what is often perceived as no big deal

As I said, I do fear a misunderstanding but hopefully with the few we have had, EG missiles falling or flying over Poland, Russian and usa have their hotlines ready

"Posturing" is good but ther is a limit
Pootin is not a rational man he is a coward that will not hesitate to have killed many of his own people in the war or the the other side in order to retain power.
As it stands, it looks as though the russians are in a slightly stronger position than before

Chian is a worry, and this week or from today, china and usa are conding so-called training exercises near some disputed waters off china. chain also makes threats and flys warplanes near tiwan

However, one mistake will not lead to a nuke war unless they misread an ordinary missile being a nuke

Good example, the Turkey warned russia about its war planes flying over their borders when carrying out attacks in syria in support of the gov there. the turkeys army shot down a state of the ar Mig69 plane. Guess waht, Mr Pootin did nothing other than shake the Turkeys leaders hand

As I said before - lets send the leaders of russia, usa, england, france and their close supporters to the middle of a desert along with hamss and other terro groups and the israeli pm and let them fight it out in the open - i bet you none of the leaders will turn up in c hams leadrs that live in 7 star hotels

Have your hols, enjoy etc

TBH, i fear flying over, near russia and genrally that area as missiles are flying on an almost daily basis inc saudi arbians firing at the houtis as well as usa taking down missiles.

Therefore, florida is safer but if things move on, nowhere will be safe.

the more we watch the news, the more worrying it can become and some tv stations and some press oten bang on about ww3. The fact is no one knows and hopefully the americans, the rusians, the chinas and the brit govs can keep wars going in other countries as they do with suppling bombs and missiles to one side or another as these counties have a massive arms industry

Happy hols

Whats your opinion on the naval exceices betwen usa and china at the same time in waters, right of way past some island chain and china regularly making threats to tiwan?

some context below

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/china-says-patrolled-south-china-sea-apparent-response-us-naval-drills-rcna146755

China says it patrolled the South China Sea in an apparent response to U.S. naval drills with allies

China has long-simmering territorial disputes with a number of Southeast Asian nations in the South China Sea, a major shipping route.

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator is there a reason you can't spell whilst on full rant?

If there is a war with Russia it will be nuclear so I don't think savings are going to help much.

You may as well enjoy the holiday as it will give you something great to look back on.

Fucking hell.

If I was going to the US on a list of things to worry about there's this:

  1. Internal US Gun Crime. Like normal every day stuff.
  2. Domestic terrorism. Just more generally in an election year featuring Trump. I would avoid travel in November this year in case of protests tbh.
  3. Islamic Terrorism. Though I'd argue this is MUCH more likely outside the US.
  4. Issues relating to China/Taiwan
  5. Wayyyyyyyyy down the list something to do with Putin.

Contemplating the risk that we'll have to put up with Donald Trump for 4 more years may well come between your points 4 and 5 @RedToothBrush

Surely being on the verge of a world war is all the more reason to go on a "lovely "holiday?
