Holiday vs prospect of war

DH and I are lucky enough to have twin girls, they will be 7 in June. They have always been very into Disney, love Frozen and all the princesses.

About 2 years ago DH and I made a decision we'd love to take them to Disneyworld in Orlando - DH also loves Star Wars so seemed like a wonderful trip.

We have literally spent 2 long, hard years saving, going without little luxuries such as takeaways/weekends away so that we have enough money not only to book holiday of a lifetime but have spending money put by too - we didn't want to book the wonderful thing then worry about spending whilst we're there.

Both DH and I are on very average wages, only slightly above minimum and this holiday really means a lot to us, I can't wait for our girls to see everything they love on screen come to life.

Family know we have been saving and we finally have enough so are now ready to book but today DH's mum took me aside and said it would be silly to book now as we're on the verge of a world war and all our precious savings would be wasted.

I confess I don't watch a lot of news, my world is quite small and revolves around my family, my job and our friends - however I am of course aware of the terrible conflict in Ukraine and everything going on in Gaza. I've also heard things on the radio in passing about army chiefs suggesting conscription and moving into a pre war age. But in truth don't understand a lot of it and don't want to terrify myself going into all the reading.

DH's mum is usually very level headed, calm and rational and isn't a conspiracy theorist or anything similar but... is she right? Would we be foolish to book an American holiday right now?

If a war broke out how would something like that even look these days? My only reference is the 1940s when people didn't go on luxury long haul flights as far as I'm aware.

Can anyone who understands advise?

This thread did not go in the direction I expected!

😂

Thank you for all the various lines of thought, DH and I are going to book our holiday then dedicate some time to his mum, about whom we are both now a little worried.

I think you’ll be ok, I’m not sure Putin’s primary target will be disneyworld.

What direction did you expect it to go, OP?

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator

"do you have to wear the foil like a Hazmaz suit or just the head?"

Perhaps you could enlighten us?

I'm no military expert but I am an expert in common sense knowledge.

No, just no

I hope your MIL isn't distinguished social commentator 🤦‍♀️

I hope you have a fantastic holiday OP and thanks for some Sunday evening entertainment with this thread. I now can't get Pootin out of my head or the fact that we apparently have puppies in Downing Street 🤣

Honestly, if people are going to start lobbing nukes about, I think I’d far rather be in the US than UK. They will be much better prepared than us lot.

Seriously?
However, I can see your point and like I said, I worry for everyone
In all seriouness, IMO, the world has never been at such a great risk of a nucelar wipe as it is now. Sadly, when all of the hype, sabbre rattling is going on and Pootin feels under serious threat of losing power, he will not hesitate to blast a tactical nuke as a 'warning.'

Our lot need to calm down and try to negotiate with those at Pootins sides and get Pootin out. NATO too along with some in the Ukraine need to make allwances for people next to the border of Russia that are Russian speaking and wanted to be with Russia

We should never reward a tyrant but at times you have to look at the bigger picture as our frind once did re "red lines IE Mr President Obama

Gerwurtztraminer · 07/04/2024 21:01

OP
Just make sure you buy good travel insurance as soon as you book the trip. DO NOT WAIT to buy it closer to the time of the time. you need to be covered for anything that might happen between now and the holiday that prevents you from travelling. Make sure it covers as many "unexpected events" as possible and covers 'travelling companions' not being able to travel if something happens to the other members of the party.

I cannot stress this enough. I know many people who weren't able to get refunds for long haul expensive holidays though couldn't travel on for various reason (bereavement, heart attack, etc) as they hadn't bought travel insurance in time.

If they start lobbing nukes around I don't think it matters where you are because there's no amount of prep that's going to help you.

HowardTJMoon · 07/04/2024 21:02

@DistinguishedSocialCommentator do you get some kind of kick by spouting opinions about stuff you clearly have no idea whatsoever about? Is this some kind of weird humiliation kink? Or do you genuinely believe what you say about easily disprovable falsehoods such as there being more nuclear weapons now than ever?

JoJothegerbil · 07/04/2024 21:05

Surely it's quicker to type PUTIN not Pootin?

I'm, me and my OH are both in our early 60's and vauglely recall the so-called 'Cold War'

UK is a little island and Russia covers the worlds third landmass

Sadly, some at the top in Russia and USA feel they could survive a limited nuke war - they are thicker than donkey shit to think that

I thought you were against swearing?

Agreed and the capacity of the larger nukes has massively increased

There are even intercontinetal missiles with multiple warheads

The most powerful atomic bomb ever tested was approximately 139 times more powerful than the recently-announced weapon.

FFS @DistinguishedSocialCommentator give it a rest. Or at least please type Putin rather than your stupid deliberate misspelling.

Go and have a lie down in a darkened room with 2 paracetamol.
