Holiday vs prospect of war

DH and I are lucky enough to have twin girls, they will be 7 in June. They have always been very into Disney, love Frozen and all the princesses.

About 2 years ago DH and I made a decision we'd love to take them to Disneyworld in Orlando - DH also loves Star Wars so seemed like a wonderful trip.

We have literally spent 2 long, hard years saving, going without little luxuries such as takeaways/weekends away so that we have enough money not only to book holiday of a lifetime but have spending money put by too - we didn't want to book the wonderful thing then worry about spending whilst we're there.

Both DH and I are on very average wages, only slightly above minimum and this holiday really means a lot to us, I can't wait for our girls to see everything they love on screen come to life.

Family know we have been saving and we finally have enough so are now ready to book but today DH's mum took me aside and said it would be silly to book now as we're on the verge of a world war and all our precious savings would be wasted.

I confess I don't watch a lot of news, my world is quite small and revolves around my family, my job and our friends - however I am of course aware of the terrible conflict in Ukraine and everything going on in Gaza. I've also heard things on the radio in passing about army chiefs suggesting conscription and moving into a pre war age. But in truth don't understand a lot of it and don't want to terrify myself going into all the reading.

DH's mum is usually very level headed, calm and rational and isn't a conspiracy theorist or anything similar but... is she right? Would we be foolish to book an American holiday right now?

If a war broke out how would something like that even look these days? My only reference is the 1940s when people didn't go on luxury long haul flights as far as I'm aware.

Can anyone who understands advise?

Well, call me whatever you want. But at the moment, I would not fly long haul, and I will not go to certain places for my holidays. Sticking to Europe this year.

Why ever not??

It's clear int he title of the thread!

If WW3 goes the same way as WW1 and WW2 then that Europe decision wouldnt be the most sensible...

Wondering why MY post about DSC has been deleted?

Has @DistinguishedSocialCommentator been at the good stuff again? It's either that or she doesn't have school tomorrow.

What did it say?

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 07/04/2024 21:17

As suggested, buy your travel insurance at the same time as you book your holiday.
As the USA does not have a NHS, buy the best you can afford.

We live in a VERY different world now!

Do we? Because one of the current wars is in Europe. Europe is a large place but confidently implying a holiday in Europe is safer than a holiday in America when part of Europe is currently at war seems a little... bold...

EffortlesslyInelegant · 07/04/2024 21:23

Hard to take Distinguished seriously when he says 'Belarus or whatever it's called' and then links to an article from the Daily Record. Grin

And as for the oh-so-not-funny spelling of Putin - I've had boils on my arse that were funnier than that Grin

Agreed and the capacity of the larger nukes has massively increased

There are even intercontinetal missiles with multiple warheads

https://www.newsweek.com/joe-biden-nuclear-weapon-1843602

For the love of all that is holy, not only is it patently untrue that "the capacity of the larger nukes has massively increased", the very page you link to says AS ITS FIRST LINE OF TEXT:

"The new nuclear gravity bomb being developed under the administration of President Joe Biden is orders of magnitude less powerful than the biggest bombs in history."

Less powerful. Not more. Less. That means decreased, not increased.

Hmmmm, I think DistinguishedSocialCommentator is the most oxymoronic user name I have ever seen on here!

Maybe your now a parent take a wee bit of interest in current affairs, you might not be bothered but do it for your children

Goldfishonabike · 07/04/2024 21:32

OP I’m so sorry you have to worry about stuff like that when you’ve been saving up and looking forward to a holiday!
I work in foreign relations and have access to intelligence and I am pretty confident when I tell you that no, we are not on the verge of a world war.

The war in Ukraine is regional and contained, although NATO hawks would have us believe otherwise. Please don’t listen. Russia can’t even win the war in Ukraine and does not have resources for more than hybrid attacks (like cyber attacks etc) on the West, and that is w as likely to happen to the UK as to tor US.
the Israel/Gaza war may spill over in the Middle East, but this will not affect Florida!

The big ones to watch is China/US but that is coming down the like muck muck slower and will be years before anything may kick off.

There have always been wars and unless you’re planning to travel to a war zone, there’s no reason to live your life in fear of them.

just for a further sanity check, we are going on holiday to visit family in Armenia, which is right next to Russia, and we are not worried one bit.

please go and have fun!

Goldfishonabike · 07/04/2024 21:33

Ps., sorry for the terrible amount of typos!

VariantHela · 07/04/2024 21:38

Book the holiday! But wait till 18th April as you'll get free food if you stay onsite with Disney x

SoupChicken · 07/04/2024 21:45

A) No one is going to invade Florida, so even if you were there when WW3 broke out you’d be safe.

B) No one is going to invade the UK without invading every other country in Europe first, so you’d have ample warning.

C) If WW3 breaks out the last thing you’ll care about is that you paid for your holiday.

Orangeecats · 07/04/2024 22:01

Way to put a downer on your trip of a lifetime! Ignore her and book it!

What hotel do you want to stay in? Try and fit in a trip to Universal too because the rides there are amazing 😀

Hi

We are in seriously dangerous times#
I was worried sick re Mr Pootins initial rant on the night of the invasions.#I feared a nuke out soon, within 2 weeks

There is not a great danger of war but the way the puppy is barking ie English gov, no wonder Pootin singles us out

What I fear more so is a big misunderstanding EG missile attack mistake for nuke attack and response and Armageddon

I also fear some crazy person to hack nuke systems of Russian or usa/etc and launch a strike

I'd want to survive but as it will be affecting the whole planet, those left behind will suffer a lot more than those taken out in the intial strikes.

TBH, we did touch on/consider a buker build under our garden during the first week or so of Pootins war

Sadly, Pootin is as bad as our lot as a lot of stuff was going on in the Ukraine and the right wing in Russia took action - both sides have lost good, innocent people.

Russian soldeirs on the whole dont have a great choice if they refuse to fight Potis war

Pootin is a coward, shits self from Covid but reads to have kiled hundreds of thousands of people inc children

Blimey 🤨

Wonderfulstuff · 07/04/2024 22:11

Surely even more reason to go and enjoy WDW whilst you can (if you believe the doom). Go and enjoy a wonderful holiday with your family.

InSpainTheRain · 07/04/2024 22:36

She doesnt want you to go and this is her way of putting you off. Or she is bonkers. We just booked a holiday last week for September. No qualms at all

Noseybookworm · 07/04/2024 22:46

We're not on the verge of a world war 🙄 go and have a wonderful holiday with your little girls, they will absolutely love it ☺️
