Severe anxiety before holidays… anyone else?

We leave at 6.00am tomorrow to head to the airport and I’m a mess. Does this happen to anyone else? I do suffer from anxiety, but right before a holiday it’s absolutely awful. Worrying about so many things that could happen while we’re away. Ruminating on all the possible scenarios and getting into a panic about it.

I can mask all of this to my family, luckily, so it’s not spoiling the build up for them. This is the trip of a lifetime for me personally. Somewhere I’ve always dreamed of going, but I can’t relax and look forward to it.

hopefully it’ll be better once we are there.

Does anyone else experience this?

Hiya, I suffer with anxiety quite often before going on holiday, I also get very overwhelmed. Once I’m there I tend to settle down. I hope you can maybe distract yourself, or perhaps think of beat case scenarios instead of worst case scenarios?

I wish you well. Enjoy your holiday and take loads of photos!

I do, mainly focused on fear of missing flights. I am usually okay when I arrive.

I think I will somehow lose my passport or be booked onto the wrong flight or something like that - it's airport based. I haven't flown for a few years and have enjoyed holidays so much more - tho actually I had a slightly less severe version of the anxiety over ferry tickets once....

Yes I do! I can't eat and feel a bit sick. The worst was our holiday to Florida. I kept having to get my partner to stop at the services on the way to the airport so that I could use the toilet!

I don't worry about anything bad happening I just feel like I'm out of my comfort zone and the anxiety is terrible!

You are not alone with this x

Hope you are away having a lovely time by the time you read this.
I can definitely relate. I've travelled a fair bit and love having my holidays booked in advance to look forward to them- as well as lots of research and planning!
But, in the week or two before I go, I always start to think "oh I wish I hadn't booked this, I don't want to go!" I've had this all my life.
And even though I know I get this feeling and that it passes, the anxiety still gets me every time. Could be a uk trip or a long haul. 2 days or 2 weeks.
I always have a lovely time and therefore book another trip.. but when I have a trip approaching.. I tell myself- never again!
Hope your anxiety is a distant memory at this stage and you're having a ball.

Yes me. I’m not an anxious person and have travelled a lot with and without kids but the older I get the more scenarios play out in my head that could potentially go wrong.

I worry that the kids will get sick or break a bone before we go. They laugh at me as I’m constantly stopping them doing any activity I perceive as dangerous the week before we go. Like running 😂

I worry that I’ll forget something important for the airport or that we’ll get sick once we get there (even though we’re rarely sick). I worry that our passports will have run out (even though I’ve checked them ten times). I worry that I’ll fall down the stairs or slip and break my ankle etc etc and walk around extra carefully in the days before a trip. Reading this back I’m aware that I’m nuts!

I find having lists helps! Once I’m on the plane I generally feel much better.

I don't, but DH gets rather wound up. He used to travel long haul regularly for work, but he can't take travelling in his stride any more.

I get this. I absolutely love holidays but in the 2 weeks before I travel I get paranoid about being ill. It's not completely irrational as I have a lot of health conditions but they are very well controlled. The main problem is infections, I can get very ill if I catch an infection. In the last couple of years I basically don't mix with people before I travel and I wear a mask to fly. Once I'm there I relax and enjoy it but I hate the build up.

I'm so glad I found this, I'm exactly the same. We fly on Saturday and I can't imagine getting through the next few days without some major disaster. It's so irrational
