Can a virus put body into an anxious state?

I’ve been through quite a stressful time and this coincided with nausea and upset stomach over a few months. It seemed to be generally getting better. This weekend I’ve been floored though. Feeling absolutely exhausted, a bit achy and upset stomach and nausea. The thing is though I also feel a bit panicked because my body just feels weird like something is really wrong. As if it’s having an anxiety response in a physical sense. I was wondering if this could be a bug as I’m used to colds etc but never had this panic/ anxiety response.

I had chronic anxiety for years and had all the symptoms you mentioned the only thing that helped was Anti anxiety medication (citalopram)

Yes. I am the most no nonsense down to earth person you could meet. Around 10 years ago I had some sort of virus that left me totally washed out but also with the most awful anxiety. I clearly remember telling DH where I had hidden our children’s Christmas presents because I thought I wasn’t going to be here at Christmas.

Anyway, I am still here! The physical and psychological symptoms passed in a few days. Have never forgotten it though.

@Belindabelle thanks yes the weird thing is other than exhausted and upset stomach it’s not particularly bad compared to some other bugs I’ve had. But just in an anxious state as if my body has physically gone into this heightened mode. Thanks though good to know I’m not alone and that it passed soon.
@ThisNiftyMintCat thanks yes I think that might be the next step that’s needed. They’ve done blood tests for the nausea etc I’d been having but everything came back clear

I get this as a symptom of migraines for some reason

Depending on your age anxiety etc can all present as part of perimenopause..and definitely makes you feel everything is not the same.

Yeah, look at Covid, it’s known for it.

Ive had it after flu and with long COVID. Both horrible.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 06/04/2024 22:26

Wouldn't surprise me. It's quite common for flu etc to alter your mood and make you feel teary, so i'm sure anxiety is a possibility too.
