60mph winds and heavy rain at holiday destination tomorrow. Stay home or go on holiday?

I'm pretty sure we're going to have to stay home. 😭 So looking for ideas, alternatives, or just tea and sympathy.

Supposed to go on holiday in Skye for the weekend with DH and DS who's 6 and with SEN. I've been before with DH but the point of the trip was to take DS to see it for the first time.

Winds step up at 8am tomorrow and continues until the afternoon we leave. Obviously can't do any walks in 40-60mph winds. If we went we'd probably be holed up in our pod/cabin for the whole weekend.

DS is not great with bad weather in the best circumstances and I think he would be upset at the noise of the wind in the pod but he might be ok with his tablet and hiding under blankets.

Refund not possible at this point.

DH is sulking that I even checked the weather and he is suggesting going as a day trip tomorrow, but it still means travelling for hours across the Highlands and back in high winds and heavy rain.

Where we're staying now has much better weather for the weekend. It makes sense to stay, but I feel bad for DH. I do think he'll come around tomorrow. DH's first instinct is to just go for it and see what happens. 😬 Thankfully it's tempered since becoming a dad.

Would you cancel the whole trip too? No chance of going later and it's the only holiday we have planned for this year.

i'd go, it's Scotland, it's always wet and windy!

crumblingschools · 06/04/2024 00:04

Will you be able to get there?

Hardly, it's a named storm..... I probably wouldn't go tbh.

I live in Scotland and I'd go

If it's your only holiday and you cant get a refund id just go and make the best of it

LegalAlienWooHoo · 06/04/2024 00:07

The point of the holiday seems to be outside stuff. If you'd have more fun indoors where you are (more stuff to play with, more space etc) then I'd stay put.

Driving. I guess there's a risk the Skye bridge could close, but a group I'm on says that traffic on the bridge is anticipated to be as usual tomorrow. 🤷‍♀️

Can your DH go and take a friend?

Mamma37447 · 06/04/2024 00:10

For everyone saying go, aren't the winds and debris dangerous?

No, we're at a stopping off point but still several hours from Skye.

Although the winds are high, the bridge will still be open to cars unless it gets to about 75mph. May well be closed to high sided vehicles though, and cautious driving is advisable. I'd probably only recommend the journey if you're used to driving in adverse weather on the types of road you'll be driving on, and do check advice for the route before you set off. The ferries are reasonably likely to be off, I'd think

I would go, make sure you have snacks and games/things to do. DS's blankets and tablet and you could perhaps make a blanket fort or some kind of den.

I can't see a a weather warning for Skye on BBC weather. Have you read somewhere that travel is not advised?

dontbenastyhaveapasty · 06/04/2024 00:17

It’s only a yellow warning. 40mph wind is well within the range of wholly unremarkable weather for coastal regions. Nothing to get stressed about at all.

As long as you can travel there safely I’d definitely go. Why miss your only holiday of the year? I’m going for a night away right on the coast tomorrow, there’s no way I’d be cancelling because of this yellow warning (I’ll be in the same weather warning, just much further south!)

No, you’re only likely to get things blowing about dangerously when gusts are over 60mph or so.

if you live in a coastal area you get used to making sure things aren’t going to blow away down the street at the first gust of wind.

Mamma37447 · 06/04/2024 00:38

Winds are around 55mph overall. But consensus is to go, hmmm.

DH is a careful driver but I don't think he's used to driving in such high winds along the coast.

No, I just saw winds of 58mph and I got a bit freaked out.

The last two hyped up named storms were nowhere near as bad as predicted, I'd make a judgement based on actual weather not predictions

Mamma37447 · 06/04/2024 00:43

I suppose I'm freaking a bit because when we had 40mph at home recently we had trees come down and our power got knocked out. But I guess on the coast everything is either tethered down or has already blown away? Maybe I'm overreacting.

A lot of the yellow warnings come to bugger all.

QueenBitch666 · 06/04/2024 01:05

7 visits to Skye under my belt in all weathers. I'd still go. Just be prepared

JMSA · 06/04/2024 04:55

I'd go, for sure.

OldTinHat · 06/04/2024 05:07

Definitely go! It's your holiday!
