60mph winds and heavy rain at holiday destination tomorrow. Stay home or go on holiday?

I'm pretty sure we're going to have to stay home. 😭 So looking for ideas, alternatives, or just tea and sympathy.

Supposed to go on holiday in Skye for the weekend with DH and DS who's 6 and with SEN. I've been before with DH but the point of the trip was to take DS to see it for the first time.

Winds step up at 8am tomorrow and continues until the afternoon we leave. Obviously can't do any walks in 40-60mph winds. If we went we'd probably be holed up in our pod/cabin for the whole weekend.

DS is not great with bad weather in the best circumstances and I think he would be upset at the noise of the wind in the pod but he might be ok with his tablet and hiding under blankets.

Refund not possible at this point.

DH is sulking that I even checked the weather and he is suggesting going as a day trip tomorrow, but it still means travelling for hours across the Highlands and back in high winds and heavy rain.

Where we're staying now has much better weather for the weekend. It makes sense to stay, but I feel bad for DH. I do think he'll come around tomorrow. DH's first instinct is to just go for it and see what happens. 😬 Thankfully it's tempered since becoming a dad.

Would you cancel the whole trip too? No chance of going later and it's the only holiday we have planned for this year.

It's supposed to be 50-60 mph winds here today and tomorrow (Ireland) and I wouldn't go for a picnic, but I don't think this would be unusual for Skye? It is so often windy there - anything loose or weak has probably already blown over.

I'm in Scotland and it's very still actually.

I would still go though I would check the tablet will definitely work in the pod (asd child Mum!) Its true there isn't much not outside, there's a castle in Dunvegan and a lovely restaurant which does evening meals (Old School) but you will need to do a reservation. Sometimes the weather varies in different parts of Skye but it does look pretty dire everywhere on checking. If your DS loves fluffy sheep there are loads of fluffy sheep on the roads esp to the north and towards Elgol. It is amazing scenery. Though you know your DC best, my asd one loves terrible weather but if its likely to make him distressed rather than just in hiding I would probably stay (maybe let your DH go for some 60mph wind walks on Skye if you can manage without him - lighthouse will not be safe). Sorry that its not better weather. You could try phoning the cabins and see if they will let you move the booking, sometimes non-refundable still let you move and explain only holiday you will get and SN child.

I would 10p % still go! Weather forecasts aren't always right!

Thanks all for the push we're in Skye! We did the Fairy Pools walk and the wind is a bit mad, definitely feel buffeted about at times, plus stingy rain, but survived! Lots of families with young kids too. Recovering in a cafe now. DS is ok so far. I think one big windy walk will do us for the rest of the day now!

Will check out Old School. Any tips for a family friendly restaurants for Sunday?

Glad you are having a good time. It is looking pretty windy/gusty/cold tomorrow with snow potentially, well according to metoffice any way (the apps are a bit crap) so maybe a nice day in the warm tomorrow!

Glad to know you are there and enjoying it.

We're at our pod now, exposed at the top of a hill by the coast. The sun is out but it is exceptionally windy! We could barely walk in from the car! 😅 It's a shame not to be able to go out when it's so beautiful now, but we have a lovely view at least and the weather is making us feel quite adventurous even if it's just glamping!

To Mamma37447 sounds lovely and nice to get away. Enjoy rest of your stay and the views. Always wanted to visit there, maybe one day hopefully.

Glad you went - the fairy pools are amazing and its so beautiful there apart from the weather If it calms Dunvegan has a lovely seal boat trip if you are round that way and your DS likes seals.
