60mph winds and heavy rain at holiday destination tomorrow. Stay home or go on holiday?

I'm pretty sure we're going to have to stay home. 😭 So looking for ideas, alternatives, or just tea and sympathy.

Supposed to go on holiday in Skye for the weekend with DH and DS who's 6 and with SEN. I've been before with DH but the point of the trip was to take DS to see it for the first time.

Winds step up at 8am tomorrow and continues until the afternoon we leave. Obviously can't do any walks in 40-60mph winds. If we went we'd probably be holed up in our pod/cabin for the whole weekend.

DS is not great with bad weather in the best circumstances and I think he would be upset at the noise of the wind in the pod but he might be ok with his tablet and hiding under blankets.

Refund not possible at this point.

DH is sulking that I even checked the weather and he is suggesting going as a day trip tomorrow, but it still means travelling for hours across the Highlands and back in high winds and heavy rain.

Where we're staying now has much better weather for the weekend. It makes sense to stay, but I feel bad for DH. I do think he'll come around tomorrow. DH's first instinct is to just go for it and see what happens. 😬 Thankfully it's tempered since becoming a dad.

Would you cancel the whole trip too? No chance of going later and it's the only holiday we have planned for this year.

I would definitely go. Wouldn't occur to me not to.

Still forecast to reach 58mph today and is over 60mph tomorrow.

Monday looks relatively good though. 😅

It's a yellow warning for the UK and its only a named storm because met eireann named it due to parts of Ireland having an orange warning. The storm is also today and won't be over the UK until later today. So I'm sure you'll be fine

Those wind speeds are really not that bad for coastal Scotland. I would go. The bridges don't close to cars at that wind speed. You'll be driving slowly due to the windy roads anyway!

stormsurfer · 06/04/2024 07:01

I mean windy as in bendy and curvy roads, not windy as in stormy!

Setyoufree · 06/04/2024 07:18

I'd definitely go.

Willmafrockfit · 06/04/2024 07:19

60 mph winds are not too bad

CosmosQueen · 06/04/2024 07:27

The bbc have admitted that they exaggerate the weather forecasts , the yellow warning doesn’t mean you’re going to get hurricane force winds, just that gusts may reach whatever speed.
It wouldn’t stop me.

rookiemere · 06/04/2024 07:29

I wouldn't go. Driving and staying in a camping pod in gale force winds doesn't sound like fun to me.
We were meant to be going to Arran but all the ferries are cancelled (thankfully).

JennyfromtheBlok · 06/04/2024 07:30

I would go. But the. We were camping in a tent in 45mpg winds last weekend.

KenAdams · 06/04/2024 07:51

60mph is not that high for that area. I'd still go.

Goldenhandcuffs · 06/04/2024 07:59

I would go too. We’ve just returned yesterday from a week on the western isles and the weather was much better than forecast every single day. Even yesterday whilst supposed to be stormy, ferry was smooth and on time, and it was more like sunshine and showers with a sea breeze. Driving was fine.

HelpMebeok · 06/04/2024 08:03

I'd go.

moreoutsidespace · 06/04/2024 08:05

Go, it’s Scotland. It’s 15/16 degrees today and a bit windy. We woke to 2 inches of snow yesterday.

Lastarse · 06/04/2024 08:07

I’d go, am in the north of Ireland by the coast, it’s quite windy but I am going for lunch and carrying on as usual with a raincoat.

stopringingme · 06/04/2024 08:11

@Mamma37447

Try and get some ear defenders for your DS, they were a game changer for my DD who has Autism and is very noise sensitive, any gust of wind would really upset her.

I would keep an eye on the weather and make a decision nearer the time you are due to leave.

BrendaSmall · 06/04/2024 08:12

You’re in the UK
if you wait for the right weather you’ll never go anywhere 🤣🤣

OolongTeaDrinker · 06/04/2024 08:13

I’d be swayed by what your accommodation was like, if it’s spacious and comfortable I would go, but if it’s a flimsy camping pod with no real room to hang out I probably wouldn’t.

MississippiAF · 06/04/2024 08:13

I’d go, absolutely.

Pashazade · 06/04/2024 08:15

Also worth remembering the wind speed is for top speed predicted for gusts of wind not prolonged periods.

butelass · 06/04/2024 08:18

I would go as it's Skye so not reliant on a ferry. I hope you have already left and driven this morning as it's dead calm in the west at the moment - high winds not forecast until later. The west coast and isles are well used to winds a lot higher than that and there have been so many named storms already this winter that most trees that were going to must already be down!

Yesterday was mad on the ferries due to the warnings as everyone tried to travel ahead of it.

MrKDilkington · 06/04/2024 08:21

I wouldn't go. I say that as someone who rode out a named storm on South Uist in the Outer Hebrides.
We had the added excitement of being stuck on Uist for 5 days because the ferries stopped running. You obviously won't have that issue on Skye. But there is nothing to do on Skye apart from outdoor pursuits. You won't really find cafes or pubs or indoor cultural attractions, so I think you'd be pretty bored.

ZenNudist · 06/04/2024 08:22

I'd go. Why book Scotland in April if unwilling to brave the weather?!

LlynTegid · 06/04/2024 08:27

I think you'll be fine. Weather forecasts tend to be the worst, ever since the 1987 'Hurricane, what hurricane' forecast.

BOOTS52PollyPrissyPants · 06/04/2024 08:47

If it is not too windy then go after check weather warning. Is blowing a gale here in Ireland have barely slept at all so it's a bit scary. Have a lovely time if you go.
