Hi,

A couple of weeks ago I set up a new phone to give to DP as a gift. I used my email address to set everything up but then logged out. It's an android phone.

However the past couple of days my SMS messages have been going to that phone instead of my own and have no idea why or how to stop this. Whilst I have no issue with this or anything to hide. Some of these messages are pretty personal and i dont even know they have been sent by people or even recieved because im not getting them, my partner is. Anyone have any ideas?

Just to note, my sim card isn't and never has been in this new phone, calls and app notifications are being recieved to my normal phone as usual but not SMS messages. Only my email has been linked briefly to the device but I'm still getting email notifications, etc on my phone.

What is going on!!

Hmm can’t see how to fix this. Your husband could return the phone to factory settings and set it up with his own email from scratch. Hopefully that would work.

@RollOnSpringDays we have just tried this and now my sms messages aren't coming through to either device at all now

There’s something in the settings that allows you to select which number is linked to phone , we had to do it for husbands iPhone this week.

  1. Try this On your Android device, open Settings Google Manage your Google Account.
  2. At the top, tap Personal info.
  3. In the "Contact info" section, tap Phone.
  4. Select the phone number that you want to make changes to.
  5. Next to your number, select Delete Remove number.
  6. At the top left, tap Back .
  7. At the top, tap Security.

@mrsbyers do I need to do this on my phone or partners phone? I just ask as when we factory reset his phone text messages weren't coming through at all to either phone for my number. We've since restarted the phone and it's back connected and recieving messages specifically for my number but still nothing coming to my actual phone even though my sim is in it and it's only just started happening.

After some more investigation it seems that my partners device has something called RCS chats on it (my device does not) and activated that is connecting to my mobile number through WiFi it appears.
There is no obvious way I Can disconnect the number from that device but then connect it back to my own device. Once it's disconnected from that device it just seems the number becomes inactive from sms messaging all together.

I know it’s obvious but are the SIM cards definitely in the right phones? It’s all so odd. Are all your contacts still showing in your phone - is your partner receiving messages sent to his number as well?

Yes all sim cards are in the correct phones. Both recieving calls, other notifications, etc as normal just not text messages. He is at times recieving the odd message meant for his number to his phone still but not consistently. Whereas every message apart from the odd one of mine is going to his phone. It's even happening without a sim card in the phone, so I'm starting to wonder if this is happening because of a WiFi setting or something.

It was a very bad idea to set up someone else's phone with your email address, but you know that now!

How about both log out of everything on both phones, set both your phones to factory settings, take sims out and switch them both off for half an hour then start again?

If that doesn't work, you should change your passwords for everything and start again.

If you want to find out whether it's the wifi messing it up, turn off your wifi and do all of the above but on your 4G/5G and see.
