MN stalker, bot, follower???

CJ0374 · 05/04/2024 12:23

NC due to the nature of my query. The past 2 weeks I've noticed the same person 'liking' my MN posts. They often haven't added any comments to the thread, but simply liked my comment. These are not threads I've started, so assume they have just searched for any topic I have added a comment to. Nothing threatening, just feels a bit odd! Anyone else had this, could it be a bot somehow, or just someone very interesting in my mundane comments?

Shopping The posters name on the thanks button changed at different times. So first time click to see who thanked a name not on thread then when click same thanks later (very bored here) a different username again. Presumably one person with at least 3 usernames / name changes.

Edited

That is weird, but it could be different posters and two have un-thanked you

Penguinsa · 05/04/2024 12:56

It is strange but the one thanks me all the time and when you do advanced search I think its the same person under 3 different names though can't be certain. Though I have clicked on thanks by accident and then unclicked.

Penguinsa · 05/04/2024 12:57

I think it also changed back later to the second name.

The username that appears on the thanks button is just who they are logged on as at the time and they may have a different username on a thread. The who thanked by also seems to change presumably when they log on with a different username.

That's a bit shit if that happens?

KneelYouPrick · 05/04/2024 13:23

Can MNHQ comment on the ‘thanks’ names changing?

As said above that is a major security flaw for namechangers who may have abusive exes/stalkers.

Hi @CJ0374 and @Penguinsa - if you hit the report button on this thread and let us know a few more details, we'll take a closer look into things and hopefully alleviate any concerns you have.

CJ0374 · 05/04/2024 14:44

I've reported my thread as advised, thank you.

I didn't know you could see who had thanked you! I 'thank' posts without noticing who the poster is - just to indicate that I like the post or to offer a tiny gesture of support. Now I'm paranoid that I have accidentaly thanked the same poster enough times to look like a stalker!Shock

Same, I had no idea and am now paranoid I am an accidental stalker! I also pay no attention to which poster has made the comment, I just click thanks if it makes me laugh or I strongly agree. I preferred it before the thanks button was introduced, it's a bit random.

CJ0374 · 05/04/2024 16:56

To update- MNHQ have kindly had a look and the poster is legit. Maybe my posts are just more interesting that I thought! 😂

I don't use twitter, tiktok nor like or have followers on any other platform. To those asking how I know who has thanked me. Every few days, I get an email from MN telling me which posters have thanked and for which thread. Sometimes, I click on it to see whether it was the OP of the thread that thanked me for the reply, or just a random. I assume this notification can be turned off in the setting- for those not getting them.

I've experienced the same @CJ0374.

I can't say I've ever seen any posts by the 'thanker' but have assumed they agree with what I've said. Which surprises me as I can be a little off-the-wall sometimes

But because I'm gearing up for a quiet weekend, I'm going to pretend I've got a secret online admirer to boost my ego a bit Grin

SheepAndSword · 05/04/2024 17:19

This has now made me paranoid about clicking on the thanks button!!

TheCatastrophicJessicaAlves · 06/04/2024 09:52

same

Shellingbynight · 06/04/2024 11:03

I often thank people on threads I don't contribute to, sometimes I notice the person's name (if it's someone familiar) but sometimes I don't. I'm used to 'liking' on Twitter so I don't give it a lot of thought, and it never occurred to me anyone would note or care if I thank them multiple times!

KneelYouPrick · 16/04/2024 08:19

Hi @DawnMumsnet

Was there any update re question of usernames changing on the thanks button?

Did/is it happening? Stopped now/never happened?

I’d appreciate that being cleared up for those with personal security concerns so they can make a more informed decision regarding posting/engagement risk.

<wanders off to ponder potential new usernames for reset>
