Insurance increases - are we being gaslit?

Like many other people, I am shocked by insurance premiums. I've just had an almost three-fold quote increase for buildings cover - having done a comparison check, I can only get that down fractionally.

However, when I read articles about the increase in premiums, they talk about increases of 25%. I would fucking LOVE an increase of 25%. Where are all the articles about increases of 300%? Which is actually what I'm seeing?

My house insurance went up by about 7% this year. Car went up by about 20% but I had a deal on a fixed renewal price last year, plus I went for a slightly upgraded breakdown cover.

Edited.. sorry I was an idiot and misread your original. Trying again…!

Even your comparison quotes are 3x ? That sounds unusual. Has anything changed locally or in your household?

Mine was about 25% for home insurance

My car insurance has doubled! No change to anything....

JimBobsWife · 04/04/2024 16:06

My buildings insurance last year was £134.81 (just buildings, no contents). The quote has come through for this year at £346.89. And they've changed the excesses so they're higher.

The cheapest I can get on a comparison site is £293 on compare the market and I've just found a cheaper one at £266 on confused.com

Would be very happy with a 25% increase if I could find one?

I also was quoted £1700 on my multi car insurance policy late last year, up from £1000 the year before.

So is it just me?

Our Home insurance (buildings and contents) doubled and the car insurance wasn't far off double either.

PotatoPudding · 04/04/2024 16:09

The cheapest buildings and contents on Compare the Market was £1100! I renewed with my current provider for £380, which was only about £30 more than the previous year.

My car insurance will rise exponentially this year, because we had a three year deal, which will end in a few months. The house insurance is about double what is was a few years ago and will no doubt rise again. The boiler has just been repaired at a cost of £650 and the council tax is over £3000 a year.

We’ve sold everything we can, reduced the food bill as much as possible, don’t go anywhere that’s not free and we’re trying to downsize. It’s just a nonsense now.
